Problem with Midis FF7
« on: 2004-11-05 20:07:34 »
For some reason, my computer can play all of the sound effects and everything involved with Final Fantasy 7 for PC on Windows XP, but the Midi driver or something is screwed up, cause it won't play any of the background midis. Is there a new patch or something that I need to use? Or do I need to completely replace the Midi driver?

What are you using to play the MIDI's? Check in the config page? Try changing the settings in there. Do any work?

Ok, here's what I know:

Only option for Midi Driver: Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth

Midi Data: General Midi = says it plays, but no sound
Sound Font Midi = error opening device
Yamaha XG Midi = same as General Midi

If there's anything else you need to know, let me know... I just defeated the movie problem and now this...

Can you play the sample battle music in the config page? Can you play MIDI's in General?

Where did you get this copy of FFVII from? Check the filesize of you audio.dat file located in the FFVII game directory. How big is it?

No, I can't play them on the config page and I tried playing a regular midi and it didn't work... The music during installation works, but I dunno if that's a midi or not. I bought the game from EB Games about 4 years ago, and my audio.dat file is about 70 MB.

Hmm, well if you can't even play normal MIDI files.. try updating the drivers for your sound card of re-installing them.

Check to see if your volume levels are correct and that MIDI is not muted. Do this by double-clicking the sound icon on the bottom-right hand corner of the screen, If that doesn't work:

Try selecting Microsoft Software Synthesizer as the MIDI device.

I mean for your system. Do this:

Start->Run

type control and hit enter

Go to sounds and audio.

Click on the audio tab.

Go down to MIDI playback and change it to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth. Click OK. Reboot if it asks.

If you don't have the Microsoft Software Synthesizer, upgrade DirectX.

Ok, I checked the volume level thing and they are all set to maximum and none of the mute boxes are checked. Also, I already have Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth set as my MIDI Device Driver. And I have Direct X 9.0c, so that's as high as it goes. The only thing I can think of now is to reinstall the driver, but I don't have the net on the computer with the problem. Any ideas where to get the new drivers (links appreciated)?

Ok, what I did is got a Soundblaster Live that was lying around and just used the SW Synth that comes with it, and now it works fine. Thanks again for all your help, although this does little to help the people after me who have the same problem... Oh well...
