FF7 for win2k
« on: 2005-01-17 07:24:30 »
Hi, I'm pretty sure everyone has seem this post before.  I tried looking through the forums for answers, but came out with no definite answer.  I am currently running win2k on SP4.  I've read some posts that maybe the game doesn't work on SP4?  I also read that it works on SP2?  Does anyone know?  I have the problem where the game crashes on me when I enter the first battle.  I tried loading an old save I had, but still crashes once I enter the first battle.  I have read on a post that the game might work on win2k is there any confirmation on this?  I'm starting to believe that the game will only work on win9x and winXP.  As much as I would love to upgrade to winXP, my computer just can't handle it.  It is a P2 400mhz, 256mb of ram, and I don't even know what kind of video card is on here.  :erm: .   If any has any solutions please feel free to post.  Thanks for the help and your time.

I also had this problem and no amount of patches did any good.

Iv'e recently slapped in Windows XP instead and running it in either Windows 95 or 98 compatibility mode it works just fine.

EDIT: Im not to far ahead of you P3 933mhz cpu and 256mb ram which is sufficient for the most part and your cpu should be fine my brother runs WinXP on a Celeron II 333mhz machine with only 128mb ram.

Thanks for the tip.  I'm going to decided whether to downgrade to win98 SE or winXP.  Thanks for the tip.

Normally i wouldnt but since i upgrade to it id actually recommend XP if setup correctly it really doesnt hog your ram anymore then 2k and surprisingly runs things faster and better  :o

As far as stabality goes well i didnt notice any difference their but meh good enough and then you can just run it in compatibility mode with Win95 or Win98/ME.

EDIT: i have WinXP Home SP1 i don't recommend SP2 who knows what it will do......

I got the game working under win2k.  I used the Compatibility option and set it as win95.  So far I got passed a the first battle and went up to the very first save.  Don't know if or when the game will crash.  If anyone needs to know how to do the Compatibility for win2k I can post it.

Updates the ICF to Windows Firewall, fixes a shitload of errors, adds a check digital sign on exe's to warn you about the risks of runing certain files. Makes Internet Sharing easier.. Screws some P2P apps.. I highly recommend you to keep your OS & Software updated.

Might be good for him but i dont need any of that stuff. May depend on what kind of critical things it fixes though....

But iv'e heard it makes it very annoying to run many programs which is one hassle i dont want.

It did mess up a few games, I think Halo was one of them, but a patch was released. So I guess it shouldn't be to bad if you're playing games that are still supported, and if they're too old to be supported, you'll probably be having a hard time getting them to run in XP anyways....

I've installed SP2 but I don't really play many old games so I've not noticed much of a difference, but I did turn off that crappy firewall as soon as my computer restarted....

I've had zero compatibility issues with SP2, and I play lots of old games, including FF7.  I've certainly never had a "hassle running a program" that wasn't also a hassle in SP1.

As for the firewall, I like to be informed when programs are trying to open ports, and this firewall does a nice job of doing that.  You can always turn it off or use something that offers more protection (outbound connection filtering as well).

They limited the number of outgoing connections you can make per second (I believe the limit is 50/second -- in an attempt to slow the spread of viruses or something) which may hurt the performance of P2P apps, but only if you are really busy on them.  But... why are you using P2P anyway? :-P

There are numerous security enhancements / improvements and most of the buffer-overrun problems that you hear about have been fixed (*ahem* Remember Blaster? *ahem*).

I recommend that if you're scared of it, you give it a second look before you pass it over.

I've played FF7 with no issues (and full speed) on a P2 266 MHz, 256 MB of RAM, and an nVidia TNT2 with Windows XP.

You must have a really good PC.  Installed WinXP Pro on my p2 400mhz with about 192mb of ram.  I also installed WinXP Pro on my fren's Celeron 700mhz with the same amount of ram.  They both lagged.  Which WinXP are you using Home or Pro?

It was Windows XP Pro, but I don't think that would have mattered which edition.  However, a 32 MB TNT2 was a pretty nice video card for that machine, I don't think it would have worked well with a card much worse than that.

The machine is now my web server, so it's not running Windows XP anymore.

That is quite odd my brother is using my old machine with both Win2k Pro SP4 and WinXP Home SP1 and it actually runs faster and smoother then with previous OS's. Its only like a Celeron II 333mhz with 128mb SDRAM and onboard ATI RAGE IIC 4mb video.

Im also running WinXP Home SP1 on this machine and it is much faster and consumes no more ram then Windows 2000 did. Mine is a bit better then the old one though. Intel Pentium 3 933mhz, 256mb SDRAM, 16mb nVidia Riva TNT2.

I tend to use 800x600 as my native resolution at 16-bit colour with many services i do not need disabled plus turned off much of the eye candy besides  the WinXP Theme itself unless i really need that little bit of ram.

Well gee here's a stupid question, how would you know if you don't have a virus detection program installed? You could very well be running the "Ignorance is Bliss" suite.

I manually check my windows files/directory's and the registry often for anything suspicious. Also i made my own program to check for thing's running at startup and that are installed. Of course i could have downloaded something for this but meh i was bored so i did it myself.

Plus i made something for checking some files that are often used by windows and often targeted by malicious programs. It just compares filesize, creation date, last modified etc but it does help me identify some problems.
