Woot, progress! Good to see something useful drop in on our porch every now and then. :)

Could anyone check how stable this is? (I don't have FF7 runnable on this comp...) Would be great if we could package this as a single "patch" (ficedula + ff7win), I know the window patch itself isn't the optimal solution but it's good for debugging and data hacking not having to potentially alt+tab crash every time. :P

Gee thanx. Yeah I would love to get some feedback from people. I was going to patch the window mode into memory but I was to lazy to debug why FF7 crashes when called via CreateProcess.

Okay, I gave it a quick test. Having never managed to get Cetra to work properly it was quite a nice surprise to see this work (at least initially). Graphically, movies had black vertical bars down them, and there's no battle swirl effect.
When I finished a battle it promptly crashed, the next time I tried it crashed when an enemy went to attack. This is normal behaviour if I run FF7.exe unless I use QFixApp - bear in mind I'm using an ATI 9800 Pro with Windows 2000. What I normally do to get it working is use QFixApp and select EmulateWriteFile, then run FF7.exe which works fine. Unfortunately I can't do that now cos I'm running FF7win.exe instead.
On the whole I'm sure this'll work great for those that can get FF7 running without any tricks but I think this is out of reach for those of us that have to do something unusual to get it working normally.

Yes the black bars are a side effect of the window patch. About QFixApp.. How does that work? If it allows to automate process via commandline I think I can work in a quickfix for that.

If you switch your desktop color depth to 16-bit, the movies and battle swirl may be fine.

The black lines are becasue ff7 doesnt like 32 bit color, which is what you're likely running your desktop enviroment at.  Try switching down to 16 bit color, you should get working movies, and maybe even working battle swirls.

..or, i could just try this myself, but i'm lazy XD  (jk, i'll get to it alter ^_^)

[edit] AAGGH Aaron beat me to it!  damn you for typing faster! >=O

QFixApp is part of MS' Application Compatibility Toolkit. It gives you a list of fixes you can apply to an application, and whilst there is an option to apply these patches directly to the application this doesn't work for me, I have to run FF7 from QFixApp every time I play.

IMO compatibility mode doesnt do shit for FF7. Are you running in Software or Hardware mode?

No, this isn't Compatibility Mode, this is a seperate app from the ACT. Running in either hardware or software produces this crash, as many have found it's not easy to run this smoothly on Windows 2000.

Ok, I solved your problem. I updated it to 1.0.0.1 so that it detects wether or not FF7 is already running.

So download the file again, run the game as usual and then run FF7win. :)

Argh, so close. Running FF7 then Alt-Tabbing out to run FF7Win.exe works, i.e it switches to windowed, but then I lose keyboard control when switching back to the game.  :-? Come to think of it, this is a problem when running FF7 with the windowed Cetra patch, so having to Alt-tab out of FF7 to run FF7Win is not an option.

No joy I'm afraid.

Still, could a non-problem user (non W2K) test it out and see if everything's okay, cos otherwise it looks really good  :)

For an update on this I fixed the "Screensaver Prompts" when playing on Window Mode, I will make that public in a couple of days..

Synergy Blades if possible sometime you should try installing WinXP even if it's not a clean install but a side installation (Both 2k and XP) i set this up for my brother so he could play it and no problems even with both OS's on the same drive and partition.

If you run FF7 in XP even without compatibility mode it will have a far better chance i couldn't get it running in 2k but since im using XP now it works great.

I don't see any reason to upgrade to XP, quite happy in 2000 without having to shell out to get an upgraded GUI. Besides, I have no problems running FF7 normally, it's just that it makes running this little app with it a problem.
