Getting FF9 (PSX-UK-PAL) to Work on ePSXe
« on: 2005-06-25 09:48:58 »
Hi, I used to be able to get my PSX version of Final Fantasy 9 UK PAL to work on ePSXe around a year ago, but I can't anymore, and I don't remember how I did it before :( I think I might have downloaded a patch or something but I tried a patch recently something called hooligan's uk patch, but that doesn't work, it just makes a cheat menu appear when I start the game and the screen is still black after that.

Has anyone here managed to get FF9 PSX/PAL/UK working on ePSXe? I just keep getting a black screen all the time. Any help would be appreciated.

it's because of the copy protection on the FF9 PAL disks, you have to download PSF patches that bypass the protection.

ok, but where can I get them from? I remember I actually *did* download a patch to get it working last year, but I can't remember for the life of me what the patch was called nor where I downloaded it :(

Well if you search for "Final Fantasy 9 black screen PSX" on google minus the quotes it should find a guide for you on getting it working. I've come across 2 in the past. If you have no luck I might be able to send you them if I can find them.

I remember searching for that patch months ago and failed miserably in finding it. Every single link that I tracked down was dead. All I can say is, I hope you have better luck.

I remember searching for a patch around a month ago for 2 weeks and all I could find was "Holigans FF9 UK PPF Patch" (Hlg-ff9.zip), which doesn't get rid of the black screen, it just adds a cheat menu, then after that it's still a black screen :(

If anyone finds a working patch, please post the link so everyone who has this problem benefits :D

Megagames has a few ppf patches.  I remember seeing some for FF9 but I don't know which version.

You might want to check it out.

PS : If the download fails at Megagames, try again later.  They seem to have somewhat unreliable mirrors.

Yeah, I tried the megagames FF9 patches before, all of them infact :( and they didn't work either as far as I can remember, I think they even made the emulator (ePSXe) crash as well.

I dont know what video plugin you are using, but you may want to look in the readme files of those plugins. FF9 was such a common game that soo many people had problems with a lot of guides were written on how to actually make it work.

I ran the NTSC version, but using Petes plugins it worked. I just had to configure the plugin properly.

I dont know about a proper patch, but you may want to check the readme files of the plugins for more information. IIRC Pete's had a guide in the readme about proper configurations for the NTSC version.. I'm sure someone put a guide like that on the web.. I apologize for not knowing much about the PAL version..

Yeah, I read somewhere that you needed Pete's CD plugin to get it to work, and to make a SBI/M3S file out of the .sub file:

About your problem... The latest Peter's and P.E.Op.S. CD-ROM plugins give you the option to read subchannel data (this is required to run some games). There are quite a few ways to read subchannel data from a game but the most compatible is the following:

1. Use CloneCD to make ISOs your 4 FF9 disks. Make sure that you configured CloneCD to read subchannel data from the disk(s) and that you saved each disk on a different folder.
2. Open the emulator and go to the configuration of the CD-ROM plugin (you must have Pete's or P.E.Op.S. CD-ROM plugin selected) and from there choose to create a SBI/M3S file.
3. From there choose to convert a CloneCD .sub file and go to the directory were each of you FF9 ISO is. From there choose the .sub file of each cd (ie: FF9_CD1.sub) and then choose to create a M3S file and give the name of the output file (ie: FF9_CD1_patch.m3s). This procedure must be done for each CD (4 times in total).
4. After that configure the plugin to use subchannel SBI/M3S info file for subchannel reading and choose the file you created for each cd (ie: If you want to run the second FF9 disk you should choose the patch you created for the second FF9 disk).

If you have any problems you should read the help files that come with ePSXe, the plugins and cloneCD.

But unfortuneatly this didn't work for me either :(

1. download: Final Fantasy 9 Protection Fix, +13 Trainer & PAL/NTSC Selector
from: http://www.megagames.com/psx/psx_patches_f.shtml

2. make a .bin ISO Image of each disk
3. download PPF-O-Matic form mega games
4. follow innscructions to patch bin with
5. run bin with epsxe, Press O to get past cheat menu

I don't know why espxe refuses to run these patches

corpse, I've tried this patch before (Hlg-ff9.zip), but it didn't work, but I'd thought I'd try it again just in case it did, but with my terribly bad luck, it didn't work this time either :( it just crashes ePSXe when I get past the cheat menu.

Yeah, I patched an image I made of it with CloneCD and UltraISO, and I tried pressing O and X to get past the cheat menu, but the same thing happens (it crashes ePSXe). I guess some super natural force is preventing me from playing FF9 ever again lol. I just wish they made a PC version of FF9.

to make the bin, this has been made just for PSX games

Thanks corpse and everyone else for all their suggestions, but I couldn't get any of them to work, I guess some things are just not meant to be :(

Yes, I'm using ePSXe 1.5.2, I tried ePSXe 1.6.0 and PSXeven, but the same thing happens in all of them, they all crash past the cheat menu on the hooligans patch, or just a black screen without a patch :(

I'd suggest registering at www.ngemu.com

They're the official epsxe forums and will be able to help you with game specific issues like yours.  Especially ff9 which is a pretty popular game.

Try makeing your cd images with ISOProducer by JNS. It uses P.E.Op.S CDR plugin to make them. Since Pete's Plugin allow real-time PPF patching, the tool can be used to patch the generated ISO directly, without any extra tools. Simply select the PPF patch while ripping, and the generated iso is patched.

given up on uk version
You know, I've given up on trying to get Final Fantasy 9 UK PAL to work,  after I read somewhere that the American version doesn't have copy protection and works fine on ePSXe, so I just bought the NTSC American version from ebay, and that works :D I'm having so much fun playing FF9 now, I didn't remember it to be this much of a challenge, it's definately the hardest FF I've played :P

Hmm, what's so problematic in getting PSX Games to work with EPSXE?

Here's how I do it...

1. Make an Image of the desired Game (via CloneCD for example)

2. Mount Image into Alcohol OR Daemon Toolz (let's say the Virtual Drive is called 'E:')

3. Open EPSXE -> Configure CD-Rom Plugin (must be one of Pete's)

Config:

4. Instead of your real CD-Drive you choose the virtual one generated by Daemon Toolz or Alcohol (in this case 'E:')

5. In point 2 we already mounted the Image, so what we do now is detect the read mode, async reads, max read speed etc. etc.

6. IMPORTANT: In Pete's Plugins there is the option to 'use PPF-Patch file'!
If you already have downloaded a PPF for the wanted game, just select it there!
Hit OK.

Finished! You can now play your game via 'File -> Run CD-rom' instead of 'Run ISO'

And you don't have to patch the ISO, you only have to select the Patch File in the Plugin ;-)

If you don't find any Patch files, you could try the German PPF patch... Grab it here:
