COmputer turn off
« on: 2005-08-31 18:52:18 »
Arrgh! whenever i play ff7, for osme unknown reason, my computer turns itself off after half an hour of play.
This obviously isnt normal, and its extremely irritating.
Is it due to the fact that i am using copied cd's? (i do own the game, but i wanted to copy the cd's because i tend to lend out my set)
Or is this a hardware problem? (powersupply / overheating etc)

Try using the official CDs.. but I dont think its that.

Id expect it to be a hardware issue more than most.

It does indeed sound like a hardware problem.

Is your computer cooled adequately?

What Operating System are you running? It can be quite a few things - temperature, power management, etc. Are you playing this on a laptop by any chance? Do you have a UPS?

Look in control panel-> Power to see if you have anything that might look odd - hibernation settings, etc.

If you run the Windows 2000/XP platform, you can right-click on my computer, click on Manage and then select the event viewer option from the "Computer Management" tree. Look in the Application and System logs to see if you see anything out of the ordinary for the times your system shuts down.

Something else just came to me.

Do you have any components on your computer that are set to turn off after X minutes of no use?

It may be that they're turning off and the PC doesn't like that, so it reboots itself.

Edit :

Does it reboot or turn off completely?

If it does shut down, and doesn't reboot, I reckon it could be your power supply unit.

This thread here has alot of info on detecting if your Power Supply Unit is on the blink, maybe you could give it a read and see if any of it applies to you?

It only happens with a couple of games though, not all of them.
Ive done some testing but havent dug anything up.
It basically just totally shuts off, and then i hav eto switch it on again, its no problewm to turn it back on agian but if im playing one of those games, then i know itl just do it again. My pc is still in warraunty (spelling) so i am going to take it down to the shop where i got it from.
I will continue to fudge about with it in the mean time though, thanks for the help.

If itl help ill post the specs of my computer...
