The History of Final Fantasy VII

[Note - This piece will be submitted to the FFR storyboard committee, but first I wanted to see how many people agree with my interpretation.]

Final Fantasy VII - Past and Present: Written by Andrew Caluzzi

Two thousand years before the story of Final Fantasy VII was set, an alien lifeform (known later as ‘Jenova’) landed on the Planet. Jenova’s prime mission was to absorb the energy of the Planet, and then continue on with other planets. It is not known why Jenova was absorbing mass amounts of energy, but it can be assumed that it was part of a larger scheme run by extra-terrestrial beings to gain this planetary energy, which could possibly be channelled into some sort of converter for their usage. Once Jenova had reached the Planet, it (genderless, note that) came in contact with the Cetra, the original inhabitants and descendants of the Planet. The Cetra did not see Jenova as being the least bit harmful, and they shared their wisdom and knowledge with it. It was then that Jenova learnt of the Black Materia, the Ultimate Destructive magic. With this immense wealth and power, Jenova could rein hell upon the Planet and in return the Planet would gather all of its energy in the Northern Crater in defence. Jenova could take this perfect opportunity to absorb all of the Planet’s energy, and then move on to the next planet. With this knowledge, Jenova set about trying to obtain this immensely powerful Black Materia, and it released a disease onto many Ancients, killing them off slowly. The few survivors of Jenova’s attack somehow managed to overcome the raging and aggressive alien, and they banished it in the Northern Crater so that it would not cause any more destruction.

One thousand, nine hundred and seventy years later (thirty years before the story of FFVII is set), a Shinra employee by the name of Professor Gast uncovered the body of the alien, which he named Jenova. He believed that Jenova was the last remaining Ancient on the Planet, and upon that assumption he founded the Jenova Project. This project involved extracting cells from Jenova’s body, selecting members of SOLDIER, injecting them with these cells, and then allowing them to grow into powerful fighters that possessed the powers of the Ancients. The only flaw in this project was that Jenova was not in fact an Ancient, and actually caused the demise of the Cetra. Professor Gast was married to Ifalna, a descendant of the Ancients, and they had only one child, Aeris, who received the Ancient genes from her mother.

Hojo, a Shinra scientist and assistant to Gast, was very intrigued by Gast’s efforts, but Hojo had a more sinister and ominous mind than the productive and conservative mind of Gast. Hojo broke into Gast’s house in Icicle Inn, in the Northern continent, and murdered him. Ifalna and her child Aeris managed to escape, and fled to Midgar, where Ifalna died on the steps of the Sector 7 train station. Elmyra, a resident of the slums, received Aeris into her family when she came across the dying Ifalna. Elmyra’s husband was supposed to be on the train, which was bringing him back from the war in Wutai. At this point in time, Hojo began his twisted experiments with Jenova cells. He impregnated his partner, Lucrecia, and then injected Jenova cells into the unborn foetus, and allowing this altered child to grow. Sephiroth was born of Lucrecia, and he possessed an amazing strength due to his inherited Jenova cells. He uses this strength to his advantage, becoming the finest of the elite Shinra troops, SOLDIER, ranking First-Class.

Cloud Strife was born and raised in Nibelheim, which also housed the Shinra Mansion. The Mansion’s basement contained many records of Gast’s experiments, and other Shinra-related material. Cloud and his childhood friend Tifa Lockheart become close while living in Nibelheim together, but Tifa is very saddened when Cloud wants to leave town at the age of 14 and join SOLDIER, and follow in the footsteps of the famous Sephiroth.

Five years before the FFVII story takes place, Third-Class SOLDIER Cloud accompanies the famous Sephiroth and a First-Class named Zack, to the Mt Nibel mako reactor, where they have been sent to investigate after reports of mutated creatures in the area. Tifa is chosen to guide the trio up the mountains, but Cloud stands guard at the entrance of the reactor and does not let her go any further, while Zack and Sephiroth go inside to investigate. It is then that Sephiroth discovers the experiments that Hojo has been conducting; housing people in mako-filled chambers and allowing them to mutate from the exposure to mako. Sephiroth realises that he has been created like this, and he completely loses his mind. He encloses himself in the basement of the Shinra Mansion, and reads up on the records of Professor Gast. Since he was indoctrinated into thinking Jenova was his mother, the records also assisted in backing this up, and then Sephiroth concluded that he was the last remaining Ancient. He decided that he would free his trapped mother, who was being stored in the Mt Nibel reactor, and then they would take over the Planet together, believing to be the rightful heirs to the Planet.

In his infuriated state, Sephiroth burns Nibelheim down to the ground, killing many innocent residents. Cloud, Zack, Tifa and her father all chase after Sephiroth, who is headed in the direction of Mt Nibel. Tifa’s father is killed first at the entrance to the secret mako infusing area, and she follows Sephiroth into the chamber. She and Zack are no match for Sephiroth’s deadly Masamune blade, and are both severely injured. Cloud follows Sephiroth to the Jenova chamber, where he challenges Sephiroth as Jenova is being released. On the bridge of the reactor, Cloud once again challenges his enemy, but Sephiroth skewers Cloud with his sword. Cloud, in a moment of amazing and incredible strength, manages to throw Sephiroth over the edge and down into the pit of Mako. Sephiroth starts to gain knowledge and wisdom of the Ancients while he is in the Lifestream, and he turns up in the Northern Cavern, encased in a condensed sphere of Mako energy. Jenova’s body was left behind at the Mt Nibel reactor, later picked up by the Shinra and transported to the Shinra HQ for further experimentation. However, the head was encased in the giant condensed ball of Mako with Sephiroth. Jenova’s mission had now become a search and destroy one, because there were still experiments that contained Jenova cells, and it needed to destroy all of the test subjects.

Tifa was rescued by her mentor Zangan. Hojo visited the Mt Nibel reactor shortly after Sephiroth’s attack, and took the wounded Zack and Cloud back to the Shinra Mansion, where he injected them with Jenova cells and encased them in chambers filled with Mako, attempting to make clones of the great Sephiroth. Cloud and Zack managed to escape the experiment, and hitchhiked their way out of Nibelheim. When they got to the border, Shinra troops shot and killed Zack. Cloud, in his extremely sick state from over-exposure to the Mako (he was not used to the Mako energy), was left to die near Zack. Amazingly, Cloud managed to survive the extreme Mako poisoning. In his sick state, he tried to recall his past and all his memories, and started to confuse himself with stories that Zack had once told him. He slowly made his way to Midgar, hoping to become a mercenary so he could find and kill Sephiroth for the damage he had done, and the pain he had caused.

And this is where the story of Final Fantasy VII begins. Cloud has joined up with the anti-Shinra terrorist group, AVALANCHE, and he begins to fight with them, blowing up Mako reactors to preserve the Planet’s energy. Cloud meets the sole-surviving Ancient, Aeris, when he falls from a reactor bridge and miraculously survives the fall, landing in the flowerbed of the Church in Sector 5 Slums. After realizing her importance and discovering her location, Professor Hojo sends the Turks to retrieve her for testing. This brings Cloud and the group to the Shinra HQ, where they discover the headless body of Jenova in a test chamber. After stopping the attempted breeding of Aeris and a ferocious looking wolf, both of which are endangered, the group are captured by the Shinra and imprisoned. Jenova breaks free from its chamber, takes the physical form of Sephiroth, and starts to make its way to the Northern Cavern, so it can combine with the head and continue with its original mission. Jenova kills President Shinra, and then disappears. Cloud and the group embark on a mission to find and destroy Sephiroth, thinking all the time that they are following the real Sephiroth, when in fact it is only Jenova in Sephiroth’s form. Jenova is luring Cloud because he has cells inside him, and is to take part in the Reunion, the great gathering of all the Jenova cells that Hojo injected.

When the group reaches the Temple of the Ancients, they see Jenova (as Sephiroth) trying to obtain the Black Materia, which has the ability to summon Meteor. Cait Sith volunteers to relinquish his stuffed body to retrieve the Black Materia, which kills the first person who touches it. But the group does not actually gain the Materia, as Jenova manipulates Cloud to hand it over. The party is left in even more confusion, and Aeris leaves the team, headed for the Ancient Capital in the Corral Valley. The voices of the Cetra she heard at the Temple of the Ancients had directed her to go and pray at the altar of Holy, which is in the hidden shrine underneath the city.

Cloud and the team arrive in time to see Sephiroth (Jenova again) strike from above and kill Aeris. The White Materia (the materia she told Cloud about in the Church) detaches from Aeris’ lifeless body and falls down into the pool of Holy that surrounds the altar, and Cloud releases her body into the pool of Holy to return her to the Planet. Jenova’s torso is defeated for the third time and is destroyed. The Reunion takes place in the Northern Cavern, and the team as well as members of the Shinra witness as the real Sephiroth is released from the ball of Mako, along with the head of Jenova. Jenova and Sephiroth then retire to the Crater, protected by a strong magical barrier. Sephiroth summons Meteor, and the Planet’s natural defense, the Weapons, start to appear. Sapphire WEAPON is destroyed by the Sister Ray Cannon in Junon, and Diamond WEAPON is killed by Cloud’s team when it comes to the Midgar shorelines. The Sister Ray is then transported to Midgar, where Hojo sets it up for firing at the Crater, firstly to penetrate the barrier of the Crater, and then to provide energy to Hojo’s son. The barrier is destroyed, but the team intercepts Hojo and destroys his three forms, and then set off on the final mission: to kill Sephiroth.

Cloud and the others navigate their way through the Whirlwind Maze, where they encounter the product of Jenova and Sephiroth combined; Jenova SYNTHESIS. Once Jenova has been destroyed, Sephiroth transforms into his godly form of Bizzaro Sephiroth with the help of Jenova, and then after his defeat, he draws more of Jenova’s power to become Safer Sephiroth. Once both of these manifested forms of pure evil have been destroyed, Cloud then delves into his own mind, where he fights Sephiroth in his human form. Cloud casts the amazing Omnislash, and slaughters his archrival, freeing the world of evil.

But Meteor is still coming, and nothing the team can do will stop it. As Cloud and the group observe, Meteor plummets towards the Planet, and is stopped by the natural defense of Holy, where it hovers right above the city of Midgar (which is an indication of how much Sephiroth hated his creators). Holy starts to have the reverse effect, and Meteor converts the Holy into its own form of energy, creating an even larger Meteor. All seems ended, until…

Lifestream. Its sparkling emerald-colored strands run throughout the Planet’s surface, all directed at Meteor. In the last attempt to save the Planet, the Lifestream forms a barrier over Midgar, and then engulfs the Meteor, causing a giant implosion. This last-ditch effort, coordinated by Aeris, returns the Planet to its original state, and evil is vanquished forever.

I just have a problem with the ages.....

Sephiroth's age is unknowned. He fought in the great war. Cloud and Tifa both regarded Sephiroth as, "The Great Sephiroth", when they were in that "promise flashback" They were pretty young then....Aeris should be just as young. How is it that Aeris seems to be born, before Sephiroth....when Sephiroth seems to be very, old?  I Guess Gast was hiding from the Shinra....... (in the manual Sephiroth's age is unknown, Aeris is 22, Cloud is 21, and Tifa is 20.)

I think the Gast Project involved the introduction of cell's into Hojo's Unborn Child.....then It makes a little more sense.

Also, Tifa and Cloud were not close when they were young. Tifa thought they were close, later on.....but the truth was that they weren't. The whole reason Cloud left Nib. (to try in joining Solder), was to impress Tifa. (To get her to notice him)

Something to Ponder....why was Cloud so out of it, in the Train Station. And when Tifa Called out his name, why did Cloud Grab his head in pain. And after each question that Tifa asked Cloud....why did he continue to cringe in pain, before each response.....
Maybe he wasn't really Cloud....but a mindless puppet...that was gathering Tifa's Thoughts of this little boy she knew (gathering a conscience from Tifa's memories). Maybe it was pure luck, that it really was, the real, Cloud that was in Tifa's memories. But, every once in a while the true nature of that puppet would surface.....and every once in a while........the puppet would talk to the newly aquired conscience of Cloud (which in the sequence of the story, is us....the players)

Here is something else to ponder, and should be taken as a rough theory:

Cloud said that he thought he understood....that, if they go to the Promise land he would find.....her. (or something like that)

Remember the history of the Celta that Sephiroth told Cloud?

That Cloud's ancestors were Ancients, too....but they chose to live their lives instead of serving the Planet..... It implies that all the people in Cloud's world are really Ancients. That they basicly, lost their way and ignored the Planet's wishes.

What I'm saying is that, the Flash of light at the ending of the game is a transcendent of all people of the Planet  (.....Evolution.....The Promise Land.)

By getting rid of Jenova, the people of the Planet were redeemed. And of course Cloud's party would get top honors....

View Ending2.avi one last time and just think about it.....

The image of Aeris, in the beginning and the ending, of the game, could mean that transcedent state of being.

By Transcend, I mean to be swooshed into another Universe (form of reality). Something that we can never imagine or understand. (The place where Dreams are born)

Very good.  The history is pretty much right on with what happens in the game.  (i.e. Cloud WAS a real person who grew up in Nibelhiem.  You'd be surprised how many people have trouble with that one.)

I think we discussed some related things in this topoic: http://qhimm.nextff.net/viewtopic.php?topic=111&forum=1&29.  You'll probably find it interesting.  (I think the good stuff starts on page 2.)

I read about half of your post, and decided to stop since it was riddled with errors. You've got the basic ideas down, but your timeline, and your details are quite a bit off.

Here are chonologically listed events that take place before the game starts:

2000+ Years ago:
Fact: The Cetra settle on the Planet. Some, tired of moving from planet to planet, decide to take up perminant residence. These people eventally forget their Cetra ways, and become humans.

2000 Years ago:
Fact: Jenova, an alien, crashs on the Planet. Jenova infects the Cetra with a virus. Jenova kills many Cetra, causing the Planet to develop WEAPONs with which it could stop Jenova, and collect more spirit energy. The Cetra who survive the onslaught, imprison Jenova in a geological stratum. The Planet, it's WEAPONs complete, doesn't release them.
Conjecture/Uncomfirmed Facts: Jenova's crash is what caused the Northern Crater. Jenova is searching for the Black Materia, but the Cetra hide it as the Temple of the Ancients, knowing it's destructive power.

2000 - 32 Years Ago:
Fact: The Cetra population dwindles to only a few, while humans being to thrive. The Planet gathers lifestream at the Northern Crater in order to heal the wound left by Jenova. Barret, Red, Vincent & Cid are Born. Shinra comes to power, and builds Midgar.  Professor Gast and Professor Hojo become respected scientists. Professor Gast discovers Jenova in a geological stratum.
Conjecture/Uncomfirmed Facts: Vincent becomes a Turk. Lucrecia becomes Hojo's assistant.

31 - 30 Years Ago:
Fact: The Jenova Project is authorised. Vincent is assigned to the team. Vincent and Lucrecia are in love. Hojo and Lucrecia concive their child. The Jenova project moves to Nimbelheim where they use the Shinra Mansion. This is the only use that the Shinra Mansion has ever had. Hojo injects Jenova cells into the fetus. Sephiroth is born. Vincent is shot by Hojo, and turned into the "monster" he is now.

22 - 20 Years Ago:
Fact: Gast interviews Ifalna about the Cetra. Ifalna and Gast have a child, named Aeris. Cloud, and Tifa are born.
Conjecture/Uncomfirmed Facts: Gast and Ifalna are married. Sephiroth begins showing signs of being super-human.

19 - 6 Years Ago:
Fact: Yuffie is Born. Wutai War. Sephiroth makes major contributions. Elmyra's husband dies. Tifa's mom dies. SOLDIER founded due to success of the Jenova Project. Members of SOLDIER are doused with Mako. Cloud makes Promise to Tifa, and leaves to become a member of SOLDIER. Cloud fails & becomes a regular member of Shinra's Army.
Conjecture/Uncomfirmed Facts: Mako discovered. Talks of Mako Reactor near Corel begin. Tifa begins training under Zangen. Cid's rocket fails to properly lift off.

5 Years ago:
Fact: Sephiroth, Zack, Cloud and another soldier are sent to Nimbelheim to look into the sudden appearance of monsters near there. Upon seeing Tifa at the gates, Cloud puts his helmet on, and doesn't tell Tifa he's there. Cloud talks to his mom. Tifa guilds Sephiroth & Co. up Mt. Nimbelheim. After a bridge breaks, only Cloud, Zack, Sephiroth, and Tifa are left. They continue to the Mako reactor. Upon reaching the Mako Reactor, Cloud and Tifa are told to stay outside as Zack and Sephiroth enter. Sephiroth discovers the reason for the malfunction, and discovers how the monsters are being made. Upon returning to Nimbelheim, Sephiroth seals himself within the basement of the Shinra Mansion, reading the books left there by Gast and Hojo during the Jenova Project. Sephiroth discovers that his "mother" Jenova, was actually a Cetra (Which is a mistake made by Gast) and other details about the Jenova Project, including his birth. Sephiroth then proceeds to attack and destroy the town of Nimbelheim and everything in it. Zangen, Zack, Tifa and Cloud are the only ones spared from Sephiroth's deadly blade. Zack follows Sephiroth to the Nimbelheim Reactor. After finding his mother dead, Cloud also follows. Inside the Reactor, Tifa, finding her father slain, grabs Sephiroth's sword, and tried to attack him. He grabs the sword, and swipes her across the chest. Zack runs by and attacks Sephiroth, only to be repelled a moment later. Cloud picks up Tifa, and moves her to the side, right as Sephiroth walks by with the head of Jenova. Cloud rushs Sephiroth. Sephiroth skewers Cloud, but Cloud reverses control of the sword, and throws both Sephiroth and Jenova's head into the Mako pool below. Zangen finds Tifa, and takes her back to town after bandaging her injuries.
Conjecture/Uncomfirmed Facts: Zack and Cloud are found by Shinra and placed into Mako tubes for experimentation by Hojo.

4 - 1 Years ago:
Fact: Corel is attacked and destroyed by Shinra Troops. Barret & Dyne escape, only to be shot at by Scarlet & her men. Barret grabs Dyne when he trips. Their hands are shot, and Dyne falls. Afterwards, Barret returns to Corel & finds Marleen, Dyne's daughter. He raises her has his own daughter, and visits Cosymo Canyon. When there, AVALANCHE is born. He moves to Midgar where AVALANCHE begins fighting for the planet. He meets Tifa, Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie. Sephiroth's body somehow finds it's way to the Northern Crater. Tifa moves to Midgar, where she starts her bar.
Conjecture/Uncomfirmed Facts: Tifa, Biggs, Wedge, Jessie & Barret meet at Cosmo Canyon. Jenova's body is moved to Midgar for further study.

11 months - 1 day before the game:
Fact: Zack and Cloud escape their prison & begin hitch-hiking their way to Midgar. When near the outskirks, Zack & Cloud are attacked. Zack is shot (presumed fatally) & Cloud is left for dead. Cloud finds his way to Sector 7 of Midgar, where he is found by Tifa. Cloud's memories are confused.
Conjecture/Uncomfirmed Facts: Red 13 is captured by Hojo.

The list of facts are events I'm positive of. Conjecture/Uncomfirmed Facts are things I'm not too sure about. I probably got some of it wrong, but all my Facts are absolutly right. (Otherwise, I would have put them into my Conjecture/Uncomfirmed Facts catagory.)

Oh, BTW: I'm one of the people you have to impress.

Hmmm.....after reading through your post, I realise that there are quite a few things missing, and also many errors in my explanation. Together with my personal experience in FFVII, and sources gathered from various sites, I managed to type this up. However, as I mentioned before, this is only a rough draft. I did not concentrate on many aspects such as Yuffie, Vincent, Corel Village and the birth of AVALANCHE, because I was trying to discuss the more complex aspects which many gamers seem to get quite confused. The story of Cloud took me quite a long time to fully understand, and also the story of Sephiroth and Jenova. The explanation is targeted at gamers who are struggling to grasp the concept of the story, and I added a little bit of history of Jenova's landing (which I admit I rushed) to give them an understanding of what happened before the story of FFVII is set.

I again apologise for the chronological mix-ups and errors, but as I said before, this was the first copy. I was pretty excited because I have never written the history of FFVII out before, so I posted it up here. I will go back and edit it, correcting my mistakes, and also probably adding things I missed like Barret's history and more about Wutai.

And in terms of impressing you, I hope I am doing alright

EDIT : I don't know if I said anything yet, but I'm only 16, and I don't know how many people around here are the same age. I know ficedula and The Saint are both a couple of years older than me. Maybe it is the reason for my restricted vocab......:???:

EDIT 2 : I was just browsing around, and one of my respected sources states that the Cetra were born of the Planet, that they did not arrive there, they were actually the Children of the Planet. I see where I made my error in the other thread though. The Cetra who gave up looking for the Promised Land, which was an extreme hardship, became humans.

Most of mine was written in about an hour or two, right off the top of my head. All of my info is first-hand knowledge. I've found some info on sites that I then confirm through playing the game.

I supposed I missed a few details here & there, but the majority of the pre-story is right there. I could of spent more time on Aeris, but I didn't see the need. (Except that I forgot to add when Aeris & her mother are captured, then when they escape, Ifalna dies & Elmyra adopts Aeris. I totally spaced on that!)

I felt it wasn't nessicary to write events that happened in the game, since gamers could see those events for themselves.

From a story designer's point of view, it's real nice to have something like this all layed out. I'm glad I did it. If we discover something, we can add it to the facts list, or someone points out something else I totally missed, we could add that too. But when it's complete, it will give us a great spot to see what has to happen, & when.

Sounds good. Indeed, an entire written copy of the history of Final Fantasy VII is invaluable, because it is a hard copy, but we can also consult with our minds too. I guess I just wanted to get this down in words, like I do with any other ideas I have that I never want to lose. (if you want a copy of my story Assassin I can send it to you, just to give you an idea of what sort of an author I am)

BTW, I have added you to my ICQ list, because I would like to discuss this much further, and also since you said you're the person to impress, I wouldn't mind getting to know you first!

These are pretty accurate facts.  Right now I don't have nothing to add here, but it would be interesting to have the real facts of the original story.  What I like from FFVII is that it is the ONLY Final Fantasy game(that I have played, FFI-FFVIII) that has a very extensive and well developed history and characters.  I think that the writers of the original story put a lot of thought into it.  Just think about it, the game starts and ends at some time period, and it only focuses on cloud's adventures with AVALANCHE.  During this time some of past history is revealed in order to make the player understand what is going on, and to explain why it's happenning what is happening.

The writers probably had to write a lot of facts from the past, present, and future in order for any fact to not contradict each other.  The thing that really makes me wonder is that if there are such files of FFVII facts and character's bios created by the original writers, would they exist floating around in the Internet.  I would really like to give my right leg for those files.  I know that these files would not be used for the FFR project because of copyright issues, but it would be nice to know the truth about the past, present, and future of FFVII.  They should make a book or at least another game that has the past of FFVII, like the one I mentioned for the FFR project.  I love that game.

I have simple bios for the playable characters that I got off of the Eidos Website. They're just .gif files, but they list the basics: Name, age, height, weight, blood type, and a brief character synopsis.
