New graphics card woes T_T
« on: 2007-05-19 21:48:10 »
Hi guys, this is my first post, but I've been looking in here for quite a while and I'm posting cause I've never come across this problem before in other topics. I've googled it with no success too.

Okay, I have a Dell Dimension 5100. It used to have a Radeon X300/X550 Hypermemory on it, and I used to be able to play FFVII fine on it, no problems. I installed a variety of patches, and there were still no problems.

I was given a 7900GS by a friend just a month ago, and I wanted to continue playing FFVII, but for some reason it doesn't work anymore. By that, I mean the screen stays black right from the start, then it crashes. I can hear the music begin and everything, but it just crashes. And theres nothing to suggest there are problems other than my 7900GS.

I've reinstalled FFVII, even the outdated movie player and directX5! Ive changed all the settings in FFConfig, and even tryed to play it without the 1.02 patch in software mode. For some reason, Even the software mode no longer works. :?
I've twiddled around with settings in NVidia control panel, and nothing gets it working.

The only other thing that I've done is disable my onboard soundcard, because I bought a Creative X-fi Xtreme Audio, and thats the only other thing thats changed. I'm mentioning this, because if even software mode doesnt work, then maybe its not a graphics card problem? I really dont know! But the audio should work fine, because in FFConfig, the Tests work fine. So I think it must be Graphics card related.

Could someone please enlighten me on this?
Thanks

EDIT: I've now tried the supposed "fix" which is that I should download Rivatuner and turn off 8-bit palletted textures, which I did, but it didn't fix my problem either.

Have u tried playing other games on the 7900GS? And if they play do you get any glitches or artifacts? Just do this if you havent to make sure its not graphics card related.

Well, nothing else I have played has any issues whatsoever. But I think it HAS to be graphics card related, what with ff7 being so old, and the poblem starting just after I got the 7900GS.

Have u tried just the 1.02 patch with movie fixes? Unfortunately there is no complete tech support with all these being done by modders in their spare time. If the basics work (1.02 + movie fixes) then one by one put the other patches on and try to build the install up.

aww man, I saw your post about movie fixes the day you posted it, and I tried it but forgot to reply that it didn't work! I've been waiting for a new reply haha I'm so stupid.

So yeah, that didn't work either.

I don't know, but might it be driver related? I have forceware 94.24 (I don't need the 100 series since I don't have vista)

Also, apart from the Rivatuner 8-bit palettized textures disabled, are there any more things I need to do in Rivatuner to get this working?

Argh I really wanna play ffvii again. I'm thinking I might as well go out and buy a PS version or something if this doesn't work out. I can't believe it still goes for £15 off ebay! But I already have the PC version, its such a waste DX

WAHEY

I fixed it! Thanks for the help borak, but I managed to figure it out for myself. Apparently, Haali Media splitter with avi support kills FFVII. Its really strange actually, cause I used to have it enabled on my old card, but now it just isnt compatible. Well its great I didnt have to buy the PSX version  :-P
