Shockwave Pulsar: An actual Limit Break?!
« on: 2001-12-02 01:59:00 »
I recently discovered that in FF8, if you use an item called "Dark Matter" on Quistis, she'll learn "Shockwave Pulsar".  Yes, you heard right:  Griever's signature move is a limit break.

How to get a "Dark Matter"?  You're supposed to refine 100 Curse Spikes with one of the item refine abilities (I forgot which on offhand; but I'd bet my money that its the "tool-RF" ability).

Anyway, I have a question.  What is the fastest way to collect 100 curse spikes?  I get maybe two or three on rare occasions.  The most I've had is like 5.

I don't know about you, but I'd like to see Griever get a taste of his own mediciene at least once!

You never new that!?

Oh well . . . the easiest way to get the 100 Cursed spikes is on the Stairway down to Ultima weapon.  You get into battles with those Tri faces (or something . . . they're a lizzard like thing with three heads.)  Just Mug curse spikes off of them.  I'm pretty sure if you leave the screen and go back, the tri faces will be back (not totally sure . . . I did it the 'hard way', through random encounters with tri faces.)

Also, Siren has to be on level 100 to refine them.  (Don't get discouraged by all these requirements . . . Quisty really rocks with Shockwave Pulsar.)

Hehehe....I still have my oldest file.

Squall's at level 100; Siren's at level 92; I got the LionHart weapon, and an ample supply of Aura.  You know what that  means. Actually, the stairs down to ultima weapon have a very high encounter rate.

Pah. That's no challenge. You want to beat Ultimacia using nothing but your bare hands, I tell you!

Well, I've never managed that, but the first time I completed FF8 the average level of my characters was about lvl 25. That was fun ... yeah. It was far more of a challenge doing it that way tho!

Well, not every fight...

It's a vicious circle, though. The more you avoid (plus I missed nearly all of the subquests ... gah) the less powered up you are to take on more ....

I did get her in the end though. Ha!

No, I just missed most (not all) of the sidequests by chance. I didn't run away from *every* fight, I just couldn't be bothered with all the random fights on the world map since FF8 wasn't (at that time) running too fast or stable.

Bare hands, you say?  Would Renzokuken be classified as "bare hands"?

Griever and Ultimecia are nothing.  I can tear right thru them in 5min max!  And the only magic used would be meltdown and aura!

Go figure what I use them for......

I did it in a pretty boring way.
I ran away from every possible battle.
Right up to the battle in Dollet.
When I had Seifer, I equiped all the GF's to him and killed my other 2 chars.
Then I leveled up the GF's till they were all level 100 and had all abilities.
Then I ran away from all battles again...
When Edea joined my party, guess what I did again
Well, in the end it was pretty stupid cause most of my chars were below Lvl 10 and my GF's were level 100.
Not much fun when I cast my GF's

I remember one savegame where I had to fight Demongate, and I had no way of powering up, and I wasn't nearly as powerful as I should have been. (Took a few shortcuts...) Every time I fought him, I was decimated... I think I eventualy beat him after about 20 or so tries...

Shockwave pulsar does 13+++ or 8+++ randomly. I don't find it useful, not as useful as using doomtrain once on griver and he has Spr 0%! I can now do 9999 dmg 2 him every turn!!!!

Well, you know how people say that the GF's in FF8 are the main turn off for the game, because they take so long to animate?  I really don't see why they don't use the one solution to avoid that:

Don't use the GF's for every attack!

Seriously, I would be bored of the GF animations (which I'm not), if I used that standard strategy of summoning them for every battle.  I only really use GF's as a last resort, since most of the time their attacks are not as powerful as my character's weapons.

Joey: You can do more than that much damage per turn after using doomtrain.  Squall's Renzokuken still amazes me at how fast it can empty an oppenent of its HP.

Plus, I recently saw Rinoa's Wishing Star limit break.  Excuse my language, but my opinion of it is (with my jaw dropped to the floor): DAMN.

It did 5000 per hit on "Extreme Ultimecia" (the last form, I call it "extreme" because that's the song for that form.); and it musta did more hits per turn than Renzokuken.  If meltdown had been cast first, I'm pretty sure it woulda done 9999 per hit!

Well the dumbest Limit Breaks are Zell's....I mean in power....

Selphie's is a pretty close second (they should have used a Tifa Slot machine for Selphie's, to make getting those rare combos, funner) The reason why Zell's is the worst?

Because they can be hard to activate with hardly any positive results. They look cool, until you see the damage results. There is one where Zell runs around the Globe and hit's the enemy....and you then see a hit, of maybe, 200HP.....And it's not an easy button combination, either. He's got a few visually pleasing breaks....but they don't have great hit ratings.

Anyway, as for  the Dark Matter Pulsar thing, the easiest way to get it,  is with Chocobo World...that is, if your lucky enought to randomly get it as an item.

And in FF8, it doesn't matter what level your at.....the Enemies level with you.....for better or worst. The only thing that gets harder, is the intensity of the game....but if you play in Timed mode....you won't feel that effect.

Yeah, using GFs all the time is pretty boring.  The last time I played the whole way through the game, I used shiva during the battle with Ifrit once for sh*ts and giggles.  I didn't cast another summon after that.

Hardest batle I thought there was on FF7 was the boss in the Ice Caverns just before you reach the top of the mountain and see the crater.... maybe it was just me not using the right magic though.

All you have to do is look at the back of the PSX cover to see Aeris laying down with her eyes closed...... it doesn't take a genious to figure it out.
