FF8 binkw32.dll problem.
« on: 2008-01-02 17:22:11 »
well I started playing Final Fantasy VIII and when I reached the point when Rhinoa went to give a "gift" to the Sorceress Edea on the 1st disk, the game crashes when it plays the movie when it shows Edea standing up from her chair. \
Here is the error message:

I tried to replace to binkw32.dll file from the game directory with a newer version (the game has v1.0a, I replaced it with v1.0q) but when I start the game it crashes and shows me this message:

other times it shows ntdll.dll in place of aclayers.dll...

My system specs are
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ CPU
1024 MB Kingmax DDR2 800 RAM
Club3D GeForce 8500 GT GPU
ASUS M2N-X MotherBoard
Windows XP Professional SP2 with all the updates.

The Game is FF8 with the 1.02 NVidia Patch and the same error appears with or without magixts's FF8 Launcher.
Did someone encounter this problem or can someone help me?

Aali

It's not a pirated copy, it's a legal copy. It worked fine a year ago when I had my old system. It's specs were:
Intel Pentium 4 1.6Ghz CPU
512 MB DDR 400 RAM
ASUS Radeon 9550 GE GPU
and I don't recall the MB manufacturer.
The OS was also WinXP with SP2... Maybe the problem is related to the video card or the DirectX version (on the old PC i had the retail DX9.0c, now I have it with the updates until november '07)
It's the same with Final Fantasy VII when I apply Saint's High-Res Patch... it crashes when I start the game. On the old PC it worked like a charm...

EDIT: I did some search on the net at it seems this type of error is quite common on systems with AMD CPUs... Does anyone played it problem-free on a PC with an AMD CPU, especially a Dual-Core one?
EDIT 2: nevermind... problem solved... the CD was scratched pretty bad (I have the game from 2001)... I tried another CD and it worked... now I gotta find a new copy of the game to buy
