Save
« on: 2008-04-17 02:57:10 »
Hi I'm getting this very weird problem.. I cannot seem to find my save folder for my Final Fantasy VII... I'm planning to reformat my computer and wanting to save the files, but I can't find it... I went to
C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\save\
but I can't seem to find the \save\ , I even typed it in the URL and it says it cannot find the folder... Can someone help me? I don't want to lose my massive files... And the strange thing is that I can still PLAY the files when I'm in the game just that I can't seem to find the files when I'm outside in the folder of the game. I've searched and unchecked the hidden content too...

well i dont know much but i would think that you need to reinstall the game because what i think happened is either your save folder was accidently deleted or your instalation cd didnt download it so you may want to try and re install your game and try again. if it still has a problem then i don't know what to say but im sure other people can help if the problem persists

I'd check the paths from regedit first. When you uninstall the game, it might be gone.

Open regedit.exe and check the key:
Code: [Select]
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Square Soft, Inc\FINAL FANTASY VII\Or something along these lines. I don't remember if there is a "save path" there, but just check each path that is listed there searching for the "save" folder.

The other option is to search for files named "save*.ff7".

Like dziugo said, search for the save file itself.   if you saved it in slot 1 it will be called save0.ff7, slot 2 will be save1.ff7, 3 = save2.ff7, etc, etc.

This file does exist somewhere on your computer.

Okay.. I searched many many times..... save00.ff7 save01.ff7... And for some reason it does not appear... I just downloaded a editor to see if I can edit the file... and the funny thing is that I CAN find the file when I'm in the editor and when I'm not, I CAN'T find the save folder.

Windows Vista may have them in another location, did you check the registry setting?

Vista does indeed have it in a different location.
I can't remember off hand what it is, though.

Unchecked hidden already... I've contacted Eidos and they reply me saying this game is too old, we don't support it no more. Wow.
Anyone knows any possibilities?

Doesnt Vista store programs in a different directory?
C:\Program Files is legacy now, try checking folders like C:\Programs\

If you're not running as Administrator and UAC is on, the save file folder will be at
C:\Users\Cloud\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\save\

Replace "Cloud" with your user name.

The reason for this is because a program running w/o admin privs have no rights to write to the Program Files folder and so, Vista directs the writes to another folder where programs have access, then "overlays" the contents of the VirtualStore folder over the C:\ drive. If you do not believe me, run Jenova as Administrator and you'll see that the save folder really isn't in the "real" FF7 directory.

To make FF7 write to the "real" save directory, run it as Administrator.
