well, do you? ive been looking into intalling som lines for my ethernet, but the best method ive found so far is using fishing poles to pull the wires through? Do those of you that have a house network use wireless, have a better method of stringing through the walls, or do you have hm under your carpet or something? id love to know.

I have easy access to the underside of my house, so I ran cable underneath the floor-I also installed jacks so I could plug right in.  Just remeber to keep away from anything that might cause interference-(anything big and electrical-oh, and flourecent lights as well.)

unfortunately, i cant do that. my house has four levels (although 1 of them is relatively small) so it would involving nailing wires to the ceiling, or something

We rent a house of course, so we can't make permanent modifications. It's easily done by running the cables along the skirting boards, or round picture rails. Picture rails is preferable because it never obstructs doorways, but can't be used everywhere ... skirting boards work just fine with a few pins, though.

A more expensive but more convienient option is a wireless network.  Although Linksys wireless cards are like $80 each.

You can get Diamond Multimedia wireless cards for like $15 each, but they're just 1 megabit and don't work very far unless you have a lot of comps (to form a "chain" or whatever).

My network setup's very primitive compared to all of your's.

I've got the "network cable strewn hapharzardly across the floor because we're to lazy to do anything else" type thing goin' here at home.

hehehe...... :naughty:

I only have 1 computer at home, but my friend has 30++. He Networks them all using eternet cards and a permanent internet connection.

He is the owner of a private cybercafe. Only his friends are allowed to use them.

He is quite rich. His name is Nathan. His  dad is a German businessman and his mom is a Chinese businesswoman.

While i do not yet have a network in my house we are thinking of putting one in. I have 2 Win2kPro machinesm one of which i'm gonna change to win98 or xp home. i also have a linux machine. All of these machines are in the same room so networking 'em shouldn't be a problem. but i'm still intrested insace i decide to move one upstairs

Welcome to the board, purplesmurf

you could probably buy a hub for around 20 dollars, and ethernet adapters for about 10 a peice. runnin the cords under the rug shouldnt present a problem, as for the one you want upstairs, prohaps running a cord through a heater vent?

why you laugh at wireless? the dell one's have a 11mbs rate  :naughty:.

that wasn't my point about the heat. it's just that with the constant heat the wire would proabably ware out faster and need to be replaced.

Well, we have 5 computers networked together in my houseit goes like this:

           Hub2--Net PC--Sisters PC
         /
Hub1--Dads Pc
|
My PC  -Server

All the cables are hidden, there are two cables running from hub 1 to my pc under the floor, one atatches to my ethernet card, the other goes throu the wall to the server. My dads pc is contected by a short wire since he is next to the hub. Hub2 is connected to hub 1 via a wire through the ceiling. then the net pc plugs into hub2(its right next to it) and another cable comes through the wall to my sisters pc.
As you can have guessed the floorboards had to come up, and so did the carpets. We thread the wire through with a fishing rod and then we used those telephone cable securing things to hide the cables behind door frames etc so they cant be seen. We did this this time last year and it took almost a week to get it done correctly ( not helped by the breaking of a cable resulting in the floor coming up again).

cool. wish i had enough machines to make ti worth while. but even if i did have a network my mom would hhave as like the lowest user possible "so the server doesn't go to hell". nazi(hope no one is offended). i hate having a system admin of compaq for a mom. not mention that drilling holes and takingup floor boards like is totaly against her morals "there's a reason we have a 'computer' room. so no you can't have a computer up in your room." oh well i might get free cpu acess soon enough  and a driver permit
