FF7music - With Sound Effects
« on: 2008-05-29 10:19:08 »
Hi Everyone.

First time posting, so hello! :)

Next, to moderator - if you feel this post needs to be part of some other post on this topic, feel free to merge.

EDIT: use this method of replacing your midi.lgp at your own risk.  This has caused my game to go into infinite loops when resting.

Ok, to the meat of it.  I have finally gotten everything with FF7Music to work, with sound effects and Mp3s all working correctly.  I also ran into allot of problems along the way (basically everything I’ve seen on the forums). So here is my recipe, and hopefully it helps yet a few more people.

Fist, the ingredients.  This is what you need to download.

1.   The latest Final Fantasy VII Music 1.51 – here (thanks Ficedula)

2.   An older version Final Fantasy Music VII 1.11 or earlier.  I prefer this download link since it has all the plugins as well – here
or go here for some originals

3.   The latest Ficedula library (if you don’t have one) – here

4.   The old in_mp3 and out_wave plugins – here and here (thanks Lasybones)

5.   Fully working FF7 PC – I can’t help with any other errors relating to the game, and it is best you know it works before attempting this and have a ready save file. Also  please do this if you can; and install the game to a simple directory with no spaces.  Seriously, this helps allot (e.g.  - C:\FF7\)

6.   Your MP3s ready to go.  They should also be in a simple directory like C:\FF7\MP3\ and make sure the MP3 names are short/renamed with no spaces.

7.   Finally, my download package that contains a modified midi.lgp with no sound -  here
If you want to create it yourself, then you need   Highwind’s LGP extractor and inserter. here

This nosound.mid – here

Sorry, cant give instructions on how to create the file yet, but maybe later in another post.

OK, we should be ready to begin.

Again, we are assuming that FF7 is already working and we just want to get FF7Music going.  I am also assuming that your main Final Fantasy VII folder is called C:\FF7\ (is easier for me and avoids complications later)

Create these Folders and files:

C:\FF7\Ficedula
   FF7Music.exe (new version 1.51)
   ff7music.dll (from old version 1.11)
   ficedula.dll (newest version)
   in_mp3.dll (from Lasybones link above)
   in_psf.dll (from old version 1.11)
   out_wave.dll (from Lasybones link above)
   FF7MUSIC.ini (from old version 1.11)

C:\FF7\MP3
-   All your mp3s
C:\FF7\PSF
-   All PSFs from FF7Music 1.11
C:\FF7\
   ff7music.dll (from old version 1.11)
   ficedula.dll (newest version)

With those files in place, run FF7Music.exe.  Hit Configure (the center button).  Select the in_psf.dll and out_wave.dll.  This dll will work for PSF and MP3 files.  Trust me.  Do not use any out_ds.dll files, just the wave dll.  Windows will most likely have conflicts if you use the direct sound output plugin.  You can also try the in_MP3.dll, but since the in_psf.dll works anyway, I leave it alone.

Next tab.  Make sure you can see a list of files.  If not double check that you have the FF7MUSIC.ini in the correct directory.  In the field at the bottom put in the two paths for the music just like this:
   C:\FF7\MP3
   C:\FF7\PSF
These can be your directories even if FF7 is installed somewhere else.  They are completely unrelated to the install directory.
Check the last tab.  Only check to loop music.  Don’t touch anything else, not even mute midi.
Save settings.

Now Run FF7 with the button in FF7Music.exe ( the left button) to see if it works.  You SHOULD be hearing music in the midi form, and maybe something else reverberating.  This is normal and correct.  Go to Menu screen in the game, select Config, select configure music and sound, and slide the main volume all the way down.  Do you still hear music?  Very good! If not then I have instructed you badly, or the search paths for music got corrupted in FF7Music.exe, but don’t give up yet and continue with the instructions below.

Ok, exit the game.  Find my download and extract the midi.lgp. Make sure you backup (zip, 7z, rar) the original midi.lgp from C:\FF7\data\midi, and copy my version over it.  The new midi.lgp should be much smaller than any other .lgp file there.

Go back to FF7Music.exe.  Hit configure again and go to the middle tab. Now try replacing some of the songs with some MP3s of your choice from C:\FF7\MP3.  I suggest the bat.mid at least.  Also double check that the search paths in the bottom field still look correct.  There should be no “/.” in the list or any extra return characters (e.g. just the two lines for the two directories). Now Save, and run FF7 again with FF7Music.exe.  You should now hear music but no sound effects.  Get into a battle.  You should now hear your mp3 selection without sound effects.  Out of battle go to the Menu, config, config music, and slide the master volume to about 40%.  Get into another battle.  Both music and sound effects should be playing.

Now the hard part will be to map the rest of the MP3s to what you like.  Here are descriptions as described by Master Ridley.  He also was one of the people who discovered that some entries for the FF7Music.ini were missing.  So you will have to manually edit the FF7Music.ini if any reference on this list is missing.
