FF7 in WindowsXP... am I missing something here?
« on: 2001-12-12 05:16:00 »
I've successfully been able to get FF7 working in WindowsXP before... but now that I've reformatted my HD and reinstalled everything (after a repartitioning process gone horribly wrong), I can't get FF7 to work in WindowsXP anymore.

Before, I had just installed FF7 and it was working the moment I clicked on it's icon in the Start menu. No big deal... but now there's a problem. You see, the game works fine, it's just that none of the CG videos will play. This can be seen when the EIDOS and SquareSoft videos that display at the beginning are replaced with blank space. The CDROM activity light is not flickering, which leads me to believe that it's not even bothering to load the videos. Pressing the [OK] button gets me into the New Game/Continue screen, like it normally would.

Here's what I've done to try and get it working:
  • Doing a Maximum Install (didn't need it before)
  • Running in Windows95 and Windows98/Me compatibility modes (again, didn't need it before)
  • Making sure I have everything from Windows Update (everything's done, everything's okay)
  • Getting a priest to exorcize the demons from my computer.
  • Browsing through some old porn mags I had almost forgotten about (okay, so this has nothing to do with this issue... sue me)[/list:u]

However, there are two major changes I've done with my system. The first is that I'm now running WindowsXP on a FAT32 Primary Partition, as opposed to an NTFS Logical Partition like I had been doing before. The other is that I've overclocked my PIII from 550MHz to 605MHz.

So... can anyone suggest anything else? There must be something I've missed. Any help is appreciated.

wow..u can even run it on XP..I can't get it to run with my GF3...
try playing the movies in WMP and see whether they can be played..install directshow, and i think there's a patch  with the movies at http://www.eidosinteractive.com under the FF7 section...

But the thing is that I didn't need to do that stuff before. And no, I'm not gonna install DirectShow, since those are the old DirectX 5.0 drivers. WindowsXP comes with DirectX 8.1 preloaded, and I DO NOT want to risk screwing anything up by installing old DirectX crap overtop of the preloaded DirectX 8.1 stuff.

Regarding your suggestion of trying to play them in Windows Media Player... I just checked it out, and surprisingly they aren't working at all. Some sh*t about a missing codec or whatever... damn it, what the hell's going on here? I thought I had retraced my steps completely!

Urrgh... I'll head over to EIDOS and check out that patch you mentioned... perhaps it'll help to some degree.

CRAP CRAP CRAP, WHY ISN'T MY LOGIN BEING COOKIED PROPERLY??? URRGH!!! AND WHY IN GOD'S NAME IS ANONYMOUS POSTING EVEN ENABLED IN THE FIRST PLACE??? WHAT'S THE FREAKIN' POINT OF IT ALL???

In conclusion, the above post is from me... damn this pointless anonymous posting garbage, and damn phpBB for not properly saving my login information.

The way I look at it, from an administrative point of view, anonymous posting should be disabled to prevent people from causing trouble. If you require everyone to sign up as a registered member, you can ban those people who want to start problems, and keep everyone in check to make sure no other problems start up. Anonymous posting is just asking for trouble in my opinion.

....It's never been a problem, here.

As far as the missing codecs.....If your online, when you try it. I think Mediaplayer searches microsoft for the Codecs. Most times it doesn't find them, but you might get lucky.

dun rry..You have to install directshow...
I could not get Win XP to run the movies in WMP but after installing the dirctshow drivers, WMP could play it..I think Direct X 8.1 does not support Directshow anymore or something...

btw, App compatibility screws up FF7 more than just simply running...
FYI: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/wcbody.asp?subid=22&catid=fccdb639-ac26-4f64-9b53-101ba27db57b
M$ says that FF7 and FF8 are compatible with Windows XP...
Looks like its more to the Nvidia or gfx drivers that cause the problems...

Write back to them, and tell them to play the Chocobo Race inside FF7, on their XP.

oh, for god's sake...

It is impossible to get past the Chocobo races in Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Currently, ony using Windows 98 works properly.

Also, next time, don't post in a topic 4 months old!

It is possible, just hack the minigame file, reverse engineer it, and recompile it.

...unless, of course, it's an problem with the main EXE. In which case you'd have to patch the main program file, which would be near-impossible.

What, another one? Dude I just came from another resurrected topic! Could you pay attention to the date of the last post before replying to these? You must have been digging in the search function to even find them, heh...

what happened to no rules??

*Side note: It's fun to resurrect stuff that's really old! I did it to some forum (3.5 years) and got banned. But of course they lick !3^115 @ doing stuff like banning people so all I had to do was get a new name! All they did was make it impossible to login under that username and I still bother the poor !3^574r|)5 occasionally. :D
