FF7 Freezes up on Windows XP
« on: 2008-06-17 17:02:22 »
I have a problem with FF7 locking up.  It locks up at random it seems.  It locked up one time at the Mako reactor, then at the section where you're ambushed by Shinra Soldiers, and then again at the Midgar Train.

I have a GeForce 6800 card with the latest drivers, Win XP SP2, v1.02 offical patch installed, high-res patch installed, yamp installed (except for the two cheats), cloud battle patch, and FF7 recontrustion pack installed.

Other than the random lockups though FF7 works fine on my computer.

Can you tell me what the problem is?  I want to play FF7 badly!

Do you have anti-aliasing turned on?

Not that that should make any difference to anything other than graphics... but I seem to encounter problems when trying to turn on Anti-Aliasing with FF7 that I can't quite explain.

Actually I got FF7 to work on my Vista computer.  There is a slight delay in the battle music, but that's all.  If anyone knows how to clear that, let me know. :)

Thanks!

Here's an error message that I picked up when I tried to run FF7 on my XP computer.

ERROR: 8007000E DirectDraw does not have enough memory to perform the operation. in FILE C:\lib\src\graphics\dx_rendi.cpp LINE 2092

When it displays that, FF7 freezes up and i have to ALT+F4 out of it!

Try reinstalling directx or something. Your problems seem to be beyond ffvii.

Did anyone figure this out or have this problem?
Windows XP Home
I have a nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX Go 256 MB.
2.13 Ghz Centrino
2GB RAM

I recall someone mentioning to revert to an old driver, but I thought there might be a better way. That is a last resort.
Since drivers suck for laptops as it is. And my comp is a laptop.
I've tried running it w/o the patches, with the patches, with some of the patches, to no avail, nothing works.
When I say "patches" I mean the 1.02, the high res, the chocobo, all of yamps stuff, etc. Everything but 1.4 animeVamp.

The game freezes after about 10 minutes of play.
I've disabled all unnecessary services and background apps to make sure that wasn't the problem.
app.log says:

Multiple entries of the following lines:
DD ERROR
ERROR: 887602FB Unrecognized error value. in FILE C:\lib\src\graphics\dx_rendi.cpp LINE 2295
DD ERROR
ERROR: 88760028 Support is currently not available. in FILE C:\lib\src\graphics\dx_graph.cpp LINE 1708
DD ERROR
ERROR: 88760028 Support is currently not available. in FILE C:\lib\src\graphics\dx_graph.cpp LINE 1714
TEXTURE LOADED INTO SYSTEM MEMORY

And multiple entries of the following (I'm guessing it's because I alt tabbed out, or tried to and it can't restore the ddraw surface):
DD ERROR
ERROR: 8876024B This surface can not be restored because it was created in a different mode. in FILE C:\lib\src\graphics\directx.cpp LINE 634
DD ERROR
ERROR: 8876024C This surface can not be restored because it is an implicitly created surface. in FILE C:\lib\src\graphics\directx.cpp LINE 642
DD ERROR
ERROR: 8876024B This surface can not be restored because it was created in a different mode. in FILE C:\lib\src\graphics\directx.cpp LINE 651

Anyways, it spews several thousand of these lines.

That's EXACTLY what it does on my XP computer.

But the good news is that FF7 works COMPLETELY on my Vista computer.  All I had to do was upgrade my sound drivers and it worked perfectly.  No music delays and no crashes (thus far).

It was fun playing FF7 over again.  The second time was just as fun as the first! :D

Could you give me your full system specs (the one with the crashes), I want to compare yours to mine.. I don't want to revert to a crappier older graphics driver if I can avoid it. But at least we can narrow down the problematic hardware. I'm guessing it's the geforce, but I'm not sure.. I'm going to see if I can tweak some graphics settings first to see if that fixes the problem. I will post if I get it resolved.
