Cloud, etc. appear black (Graphical error)
« on: 2008-07-22 01:58:22 »
Hey all I finally managed to get FFVII working on XP SP3 after many different combinations of patches.

This is what I have installed to get it to its current (mostly) working state:

- The official 1.2 patch
- The SaiNt's High Res FF7PC Patch v1.00  (with integrated Jedwin's chocobo patch)
- YAMP (fixed my crashing problems)
- NPC Reconstruction Project for FF7PC 0.6 mod

Now it is finally stable, but Cloud and other active objects appear like this:

My specs:
XP SP3
Core 2 Quad Processor Q9450 @2.66GHz
2x GeForce 8800M GTX (SLi)
4GB RAM

Any help is greatly appreciated, cheers!

Ahhhh!  I'm not the only one with this problem then!  Seems to be a number of posts, with no solutions...  Anyone have any ideas of what direction to go in?

"Pretty good" config you got there :P You might want to try some older GPU drivers - the thing is, it could be that there are no old enough drivers for your GPU(s).

Yep to fix it, you need to dual boot with Windows Vista or just use Windows Vista. :-(

Sure there's no way to get it working in XP? I installed XP on my Vista system (as a dualboot) because I couldn't even get it to this stage on Vista!

Vista has audio problems, but there are workarounds.

The culprit in your case is your GF8 card. There are a few threads here that talk about this. GF8 + WinXP + FFVII = lots of black all over the place.

I would install Vista if I could (it really is a fabulous OS; most if not all of the major criticisms have been dealt with or have workarounds) but I don't want to pay the money.

You can use software rendering, or buy a GF4 MX440 PCI card from eBay for $25.

That'd be a bit hard as I'm on a laptop. Is there no way to fix it with RivaTuner?

I'm afraid not, it's something to do with the actual graphics drivers for windows xp.
