Display issue
« on: 2008-09-14 18:04:36 »
Hello all! I'm new here and I just found this site through Google after searching for a fix to my issue. Anyway,I did a search on this forum and I didn't find anyone with similar problems, only one guy on NTCompatible whom didn't get any working solutions, so I might as well sign up here and ask!

Anyways, I finally got Final Fantasy VII to actually start up after installing the codec needed to play movies or something. But I have this new problem, that happens when I have watched the first movie and AVALANCHE is just about to jump off the train, my speakers make weird sounds and the screen turn black, after some seconds after it turned to black, Barret says "Follow Me, Newcomer". The message box shows properly, so at least I can display some stuff, but I'm afraid that due to this games oldness, my graphic card and drivers are too new to even comprehend such an old game. And the fact is that, it looks like the game is still running and you can actually play the game, but the screen is black and the sound is gone. My graphic card is ATI PowerColor HD 3850.

Can anyone please help me? :)

Disable the AVI splitter your codec pack uses. This has been answered multiple times before, next time use the search button (you probably didn't search long enough).

If you're talking about Truemotion 1,2 then it's disabled. If it's not, please tell me how to disable it.

No, I'm talking about the AVI splitter. Truemotion takes care of the video codec, the splitter takes care of the format (which is avi for FF7 movie files). FF7 can only work with the default Windows AVI splitter, any other will cause weird stuff like black (or blank) screens after or before FMVs or characters not interacting with them.

If you're using K-Lite, you can disable it through the Codec Tweak Tool that comes with it. I don't have experience with other codec packs, so if you're using any other one look it up on Google.

Ah, this totally fixed my issue, but I can swear to god, I did search before posting this! Anyways, I have another small thing I'd like to ask; Is there a way to increase the FPS in this game? I used to have this game on an PlayStation Emulator (Yes, I have purchased the game), and I managed to set the FPS from 59,9 to 80 to create more smooth gameplay as FF7 is generally slow.

Increasing the FPS in the PC version of FF7 would just make the game faster. It uses a very old method of FPS, it needs to keep them constant and limited.

It's 30 fps in the fields, 60 fps in the menus and 15 fps in battles. Those are the limits, and sadly can't be changed. Well, they can, but won't give the results you're wishing for.

So, by increasing it it will only make you move faster and such, but won't affect MIDIs etc? I would love to actually just get the FPS up to at least 80 if that is possible :P
