first off this is a double post. my first post was in http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=7422.200  in the original prp thread in game tweaking.  I think i'll get better results if I"m actually in tech support.

second off I've searched everywhere for the solution to my problem and no one it seems has ever had this problem.

Just to clarify and to be precise before anyone wastes too much time reading all that down there.  The issue is only with the Phoenix Rejuvanation Project Mod!  My original ff7.exe runs perfectly with no errors.

My screen turns black and does absolutely nothing.  Now bear in mind that it only does this with the FF7-prp.exe.  My ff7.exe works flawlessly with no issues.  It's only the phoenix that's having trouble right now.  The patches I've installed so far are the basics.

1.02 patch
chocobo patch
prp mod
and even installed movie skip (gypt) and YAMP which installed perfectly and works perfectly, BUT only for ff7.exe not ff7-prp.exe which is what I need to play the modded version.

I've also installed and ran k-lite codec pack, tm20.dx <-sp?? etc. into system32 folder, and turned truemotion codec both ON and OFF with no change.  ff7-PRP still refused to work and there's been no change in ff7.exe.

I've changed the compatibility to both win95 and 98.  Funny thing is that I'm only getting this black screen of death when I change compatibility.  When it's default I just get the screen to flicker and I return to the desktop. I've checked the nvidia box and both riva128 and tnt just to make sure.  Still nothing different.

Now let me be a little more precise on what happens during the black screen.  Firstly, it's completely BLACK.  Secondly, there's no sound whatsoever!  (I only say that because some people who had this problem report that there was sound and just no video THIS IS NOT THE CASE).  Thirdly, once that screen shows there's nothing I can do to change/cancel it short of turning off the power completely ie power button.  I've alt tabbed, alt f4, ctrl alt del, alt esc, you name it I've punched it.  The only thing I can get it to do is make the cursor show up in I'm assuming 640x480 resolution (game resolution ff7config, duh)! and I can move it around.   But I can't exit it.  Clicking on ff7-prp.exe is a one way ticket to hard reboot.

does anyone have any idea what's going on?  Has this happened to anyone?  Please tell me there's a simple fix to this.  Something that I'm just overlooking...

specs

Windows XP Pro SP3
HP Pavillion dv8000
AMD Turion 64 1.8Ghz
ATI  RADEON XPRESS 200M Series 128.0 MB
512mb RAM
resolution is set to 1024x768 (16bit) (60hz)
DirectX 9.0c
It's a laptop but I hve the video out cord hooked up to another monitor.

and sorry about there being no error log.  There technically is no error since I have to manually reboot the system to get out.

In my head I've done everything I can do and it still won't work.  I'm pretty smart when it comes to troubleshooting this crap but this one is beyond me.

And doing a little quick thinking here, how can I install the YAMP/gypt patch to the ff7-prp.exe app?  That is what I'm thinking the issue is and with that I can just say Fxck off to the fmvs.  I won't miss them.  Any thoughts?

Thx fellas.

The executable must be named "ff7.exe", period.

As for YAMP - yes, you can change the name of the patched file. Open install.bat with a notepad, and change this line:
Code: [Select]
set main_file=ff7.exeto anything you want.

Hmm... Well I did what you said and changed ff7-prp.exe to ff7.exe and tried that out.  Still the same.  And I even changed the guts of install.bat to both ff7.exe and ff7-prp.exe (2 renames of course) and the same thing happened to both of them.  A black screen with no sound.  Ctrl-S didn't work neither did Ctrl-"anything" for that matter.  I'm thinking there's something wrong with my video card/drivers that just doesn't want to play the Phoenix Mod.  Lucky me!  I get a laptop with such an obscure and retarded card that hasn't had support since '05.

Thx for your help anyway Dziugo.  I'm going to try a fresh install and do what you said.  Maybe that'll do soemthing different.

Hey I jsut used dual monitors so I could have one dedicated to only using task manager.  So I could close out the faulty prp.exe.  well it worked and here is the error code used for ff7-prp.exe <--Win95compat mode and gypt patched as well  (according to task manager the program goes instantly to not responding.

szAppName : ff7-prp.exe
szAppVer : 0.0.0.0
szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0
offset : 00000000

And here is the error code for when I rename prp.exe to just plain old ff7.exe

hmm. okay then... it seems now that prp isn't working now.  And by that I mean isn't black screening me.  with or without compat it flickers black and goes back to desktop.  so I did something that it didn't like... ugh,  :?  Oh well.  Unless that error code means anything to you guys I guess I'm shxt outta luck.  Thx for trying

Well, it could also be a problem with Windows hiding the file extensions (so the file is actually named ff7.exe.exe), but that's a blind guess. One thing I know for sure: if the FF7 executable isn't named ff7.exe, it freezes on my system - can't skip any FMV, because it doesn't get that far.

yeah i didn't double the exe.  all I did was just rename and erase the -prp. I have extensions hidden.

On my other machine I had it working flawlessly on the desktop with ff7-prp.exe with highercloud quality patch in it as well.  I just got cokcy and kept putting more and more patches in and after the advent avatar patch not working and then trying the uninstall (with the file that comes with it WHICH DIDN'T UNINSTALl ANYTHING it ACUALLY INSTALLED SOMETHING ELSE!!) it it just went all to hell.  I couldn't even get into a battle anymore without it crashing.  That went for both .exes.  I'm pissed at myself for doing that...  so I tried it on my other machine and this one won't even load up so it must be drivers or something stupid like that.  I'm beyond upset at this point,  but I gave it a helluva try.   8-)

AT this point I have one more machine to try and install too, i'm hoping for the best...
