News? Sure: things are coming along just fine.

You have to realize that this isn't something that's going to be done in a few weeks. We're going for the long haul, so to speak. We'll be finished when we're finished. Betas will be released when they're released. The plot will be complete when it's completed, etc. etc. (you get the idea).
However, like I said, things do seem to going smoothly. (Film at 11.  )

yeah, this remake's gonna take a darn long time. do you reckon itll take longer than Square took to make ff7? also, are you gonna put videos in the game?

I hope not, but at this point I have no idea. We're doing this on the side in our spare time. Square's people probably worked around the clock to try to meet their deadline (gotta keep the publishers happy).
Videos... We're idly kicking the idea around, but, as it stands, they (w/c)ould be more trouble than they're worth.

As I have no experience in programming, this suggestion may be stupid.  Why don't you do the cutscenes in full 3D, instead of videos?  I think that'd be neat.
Hindsight:  I guess as you're trying to use the origional FF7 code, this might not work, eh?

Of course we could do it in game. Why not? Every time you're in a situation where you can't control the characters, guess what - it's an in-game cutscene.

This is all slightly premature, since we don't know how we're going to be implementing the game though.

I know you could do it in game, but what I meant was FULL 3D...  it'd look better, but I doubt you'd want to put in all of the work to do it.

that'll be prety tricky wont it? isnt FFX doing full 3d scenes? this would mean no more 2d backgrounds which characters run around on, so i dont think it'll be worth it. who knows, maybe some super video drawer will come along and join the team. has your friend got any previews of those pictures Canealot?

Hey... ah, you there! Yes, you.  You spoke of something earlier about a... ahem... (whispered) beta???
Will this so-called... (whispered) beta be available to your noble posters at the Qhimm message boards?  Eh?  EH?  *wink wink*!  *nudge nudge*! Know what I mean???

Parts of this post were sadly ripped from a Monty Python sketch.

Beta's will be made available at some point. And yes, this board would be the best place to find out about them. However remember we're still just in the planning stage for the remake; don't expect anything to be released in the near future. Beta's only get released once you've got something that mostly-works; we haven't got anything at all so far.

Yes, it's gonna be a very long time before anything gets released I guess. Just think how long it took Square to make FF7, and they had a huge team working on it. I'd say it would be over a year before it's finished. Or am I going too far?

Let not even think about how long it will take. Any way we still need to pick up an artist or two in my books. If we want to make the remake damn good then I cant see us only useing the back grounds in FFVII. Hrmn.

ok time wise let me clarify
WE came to the conclusion at the start that u are looking at LEAST a minmum of 2 years, period.
no joke! its a major task for such a small team, with only a hand full of tech minded members.

Right. But we're first timers at this, so our predictions could be off one way or the other. We really won't have a good idea of how long it will actually take until we start getting more deeply into the process. Right now we're still in the preliminaries.

Honestly, it really depends.
For sure, story development will finish first.
By then, we'll just decide whether we know enough to use the 'original' FF7PC engine or whether we should build our own engine.
Then will come the porting of the story to 'FF7' game format.

The tech section could take forever unless we get jumpstarted by some discovery. I was gonna post something on the weapons, accessories and stuff so that fice or someone interested could take a look but I'm currently having webspace problems.  :(

Webspace problems? Will another 20MB do? Or isnt that enough? You see I have a site for my band, but we changed our name so I need to move it to another address. So if you want you can have http://www.cascaderulz.f2s.com," TARGET=_blank>http://www.cascaderulz.f2s.com,  unless the name of the address is important to you. You can delete everything off it and I'll send you all the login details and stuff, want it?

It's alright eerrrr. I appreciate the offer. I already have webspace with f2s. Stupidly however, they don't seem to support d/l. And their sites are extremely slow sometimes. I'll probably find some webspace sooner or later.

Oakey doke. Hey, I was wondering if you could tell me if I got the bit for writing music. I know you've got more stuff to deal with, it's just that in two years time I'll be doing GCSE coursework and won't have time to write MIDIs. At the moment I have plenty of time and seem to be coming up with a lot of FF type tunes. So could you tell me if I got the part? I wont need access to the forum, maybe just bits of info when you've finished the story so I'd know what kind of songs to write. So could ya tell me?

guys, theres not an encredible amount that needs to be discovered to make the game editable. I think the main thing is the files in flevel. Think about it. it holds the plains, the doors, the text, the options, and stuff. Thats all you really need to change a game.

.exe .zip and .mp3 pretty much covers it for downloads, though, unless you were planning to pimp some windows .dll's.

What Freedom 2 Surf can not account for though is if you remove the file extension and then tell the user to rename the file once the download has completed to X.mp3 or whatever.
