looking for hard mode
« on: 2009-08-19 20:24:45 »
Hello, all. Haven't posted in a very long time. Wanted to start playing FF VII again. I must say that it is MUCH easier to install on XP than 2000 :-D

Anyways, to give an old game new spice, I decide to try a single character game. Thanks to limit breaks, it really wasn't that much more challenging than having three chars in your party :-( I figured there'd be a hard mode mod, but...

I used the search feature. All I've found is "MSN me," broken links, or comments suggesting the mod makes the game buggy. This makes me a sad panda.

Even something as simple as upping all enemies' stats by a fixed amount would be better. I'm just going to play vanilla to reacquiant myself with the game. But I'd like a more realistic version my next time through. Is there any hope? Thank you for your time.

I did. And then I sawthis. A game overhaul is cool. I've made my own in the past (different games), so I know they're fun to do. I especially liked the idea of chars starting off as level 1. But I'm not really looking for a different game. Just a more challenging one. Is that my only option?

It's the most complete hardcore mod, but there is another one called the "reasonable" mod by someone named hay.

BTW, gjoerulv's mod doesn't make the game feel as different as the list of changes suggests.

well i plan on starting my mod back up (where the enemies level up with you, possibly being much higher than you depending on the enemy :P) sometime here soon, it will take a while to complete though, and may not have the extra stuff that his mod has (at least at first), but will be trying to keep the enemies somewhat like they were in the original, but with access to much more, and everything balanced out much more than it is now. i can actually start up any time and get right into it, since i have my leveling method already implemented in the game (and only using up ~31% of the AI space at the absolute max, much less than my 40-50% it did before, and with better overall balance :P), but i am currently the main modder of another game right now, so it will have to wait until it is done, though in actuality, it will not take long to do a complete mod of that game, the AI and stats combined is smaller than this games' stat section alone XD.

gjoerulv's mod is probably the best difficulty mod out there, i haven't gotten to play it yet (if i ever get to :/), but from what i have seen in his thread, it looks to be very good, and there isn't a lot of people out there that make full-scale mods for this game, most just leave partway through (like i did, but i hit a roadblock, which i randomly overcame two days ago XD). just try it out and see what you think (and let me know how it is, i may decide to play through using it just to see what he did, because it has been a while since i played the game for playing and not testing purposes, i miss actually "playing" the game XD), you can always go back if you want to.

and according to the two posts that popped up while i was typing, i think it is almost time for me to try out his mod ^_^.

Well, can't everybody be wrong I suppose. I'll give it a try. However...

On the first page, there's a download link, and then a note saying that's wrong, to then go ahead and replace 2 files from a different link. That's fine and dandy in the interim while a new, unified package is uploaded. So I started skimming over thead page 2, 3, etc... I see a bunch of little update links.

So is there a "final," unified relase? Or at least final links for each file the mod alters? If I'm tearing my hair out before the mod is even in place, I highly doubt I will be giving it a fair shot when I go to play it :P

[EDIT]
Since this thread is now essentially about that thread, I'll just post in that thread. Thanks for everybody's feedback.

The OP in that thread was last edited in June, so the mod will have been updated since the posts on the first few pages were made. It might be best to ask gjoerulv when the mod linked to was last updated.

He's currently working on the final release for his mod. I'd expect it to be available at the end of the month. Just use the links on the first post.

To ARMs, this mod isn't hard because he customizes the enemies in this ff7 game into hardcore enemies. Check out his vids on youtube... here's 1 for example...

try this. It isn't drastically different, just a sort of re-mastering of the game. It's definitely harder, but I wouldn't call it "hardcore".

That looks interesting. What exactly is in that torrent? Is it just a collection of mods that have already been released here, or is there some stuff we haven't seen before?

Both. It's got a custom AI/Spell/Item mod that I've been working on as well as a remastered translation (not complete like seifer was doing, just a correction of certain really poor translations). The main goal of the torrent was to create an easy installer of all ff7 mods. This version doesn't work perfectly for x64 OS's, though.
