Bi-Polar FF8 on Windows XP
« on: 2009-11-03 17:18:57 »
yesterday, FF8 ran smooth as silk on my system.  Last night, I tried installing some new soundfonts or something to make the sound more prettyful...?

Today it runs laggy.  About as laggy as it did the first time I ever played FF8-PC, back in like the mid-90's on a machine that could onyl run it 'round 10 frames a second (if that).  Yeah...

I dunno what happened.  I've replaced the original music files, and system-restored back a n entire week, uninstalled and reinstalled.  No no matter of running the game (Software Render, Quarter Screen, FF8 Launcher, 1.0, 1.2 patch, etc. etc.) it just runs choppy as heck...

; ;'  Honest to God I haven't installed anything since yesterday, and even if I had, I've system restored...any idea what could be goin' on?

FF8 config reads my system as: 1350 MHz Genuine Intel, 1023MB Ram.  I know this system isn't screaming fast, but it runs Final Fantasy XI...play CounterStrike on it...yesterday I had FF8 going at 1800-something resolution, max graphics, with IMs running in the background.  Today it just ain't gonna happen.  I can't Alt-Tab fro the game, so i can't evne try to set it to high prority on the processor in Task Manager.  Any suggestions?

I dunno waht I was on when I amde it, but I tried to re-register and my email was taken...lmao XD

Usually its just Vyenpaka-Kapaka, after my Tarutaru in Final Fantasy XI.

I know this is a weird problem.    I'm running XP Service Pack 2, 1.83 Dual-Core Intel, 1GB Ram...and its still running sluggish when I try now. Is there some magic setting or windows patch or something that would make it run sluggish that I might have tripped?  I'm really at a loss, 'cause it ran perfectly from start until where I am now, in the Training Center with Quistis.

Is only your FF8 running laggy? Any other programs that run laggy this way?

Unlikely to work, but worth a shot - have you tried running FF8 in Windows 95/98/2000 compatibility mode? Try selecting 'run in 640x480' and 'disable visual themes' too.
