Crash at start-up
« on: 2009-11-06 21:13:42 »
Hi guys! I'm on windows 7. Installed from original cd's, updated to 1.02. Edited the registry to play movies from HD.

Every time I start up FF7, it crashes at the very beginning. It's not a codec problem, because it crashes when I have the codec uninstalled as well. BUT, it does get me to the select screen when I enter a path with no movies. Any ideas?

I also just want to say THANK YOU! I played FF7 throughout my middle school/high school years, and having the opportunity to relive the experience with UPGRADES is a nostalgic feeling like no other :)

If it works when you enter a path with no movies, the opening movie itself might be the problem; check to see whether it's corrupted.

Also, can you tell us whether you have any other mods installed? If you're not using it, I suggest you download the latest version of Aali's custom graphics driver.

QFT

I recently reinstalled myself, and Aali's custom driver solved all the problems for me.

@Kudistos Megistos : Yeah that was my 1st instinct as well... All the movies play fine on windows media player. No mods were installed, apart from the update. I'll try Aali's custom graphics driver next :).

UPDATE: didn't work...

UPDATE 2: like how i said earlier, when i put a different file path for the movies via regedit, the game starts up to the select screen just fine... this is weird.

I still have a feeling that it might be the movies; sometimes they work in a video player like WMP, but don't work in game.

Unless someone else comes up with a good solution, I suggest you do some experimenting. Maybe you could recopy the movies, or copy the title screen movie from a different disc (it sounds like your problem is one of the three videos that play before the game starts, which are on all of the discs). If you do, we can see whether the movies are corrupt or whether something else is going on.

In the worst case scenario, you can play without the movies, but that shouldn't be necessary; I'm sure that someone whi knows what he's talking about will come along sooner or later and give you a decent solution to this problem. :-D
