NES Games... ?
« on: 2009-12-08 02:40:14 »
Sorry I've been off qhimm for a while, Testing some stuff out for some friends, Life, Just didn't have any interest for FF7, and most likely not for a couple months...its good, but not that good.

ANYWAY to the topic: What would you think if they remade a game like FF1, on the limited memory of an NES Cartridge, what would you think of it, and most importantly, how would you think it would look? For those of you who don't know, NES is 8-bit  :x

Remade what game? FF7?  It's already been done by the Chinese and translated.   Link Unavailable

There was a site where a handful of people were making the sprites look better and putting in 8bit versions of the actual FF7 songs.  I'm pretty sure they ended up abandoning it though

Cloud of Darkness as Safer Sephiroth just doesn't work... Nude woman with a gigantic bust / Nude man with abs and muscle boobs = NOT interchangeable...

ROFL!!!!!

But I meant like, if Square went to remake a game that was originally on the NES like FF2/3, on an NES Cartridge

Then it would be basically the same game?  Like if they remade Super Metroid for the SNES.

Maybe you're talking about a rerelease?

Sorry if this makes no sense to you guys.
We all know how much we have advanced from 8-Bit games, back then we'd say "THIS ROCKS!" then we compare to today's games and say "Wow, big improvment."
I was thinking one night, what if they "remade" a game that was on the NES, back onto an NES. Because of the HUGE improvments of technology, it might look better, better gameplay, stuff like that. I was wondering, if a company did something like that, what would you think about it? Would you pick it up? Stuff like that.

I get what he's saying, Take FF1 and recreate it with the improved compression and or technology we have today, though still for the original NES.

I'm not sure if thats even possible due to the limitations of the system.

Think like the hacked Roms out there for pokemon, the the recreation of crystal for the GBA

Well, at the very least, if you look at the huge amount of difference from early NES games to later NES games, even that short amount of time meant a lot. Developers got more accustomed to the system, and were better able to work within its boundaries. I suspect that remaking FF1 for the NES would give a somewhat more fluid experience, better battle system and text boxes, probably the engine would be more like FF3.

And for an even more extreme example of what can happen as developer get better at developing for consoles, compare FF8 and 9 to some of the earlier RPGs on the PSX; the difference is so big that you'd think they were made for different consoles.

I get what you're talking about, but recreating a game from the NES on the NES wouldn't make much of a difference solely due to the fact that NES games are made in a type of assembly language...which is very tedious to program in, but at the same time, very efficient, thus utilizing every byte of space on the cartridges. As technology advanced, we could advance to less primitive languages like C, C++, and nowadays C# and XNA. If you were to try and make a 2D game in XNA and stuff it into an NES cartridge, you'd run out of space pretty fast because of the bulkiness of the language. Every line of code translates to tens, even hundreds of lines of assembly.

That being said, the quality of an NES game depends on the sheer programming skill of the developers. Maybe programmers are better nowadays, maybe they're worse. Who knows? My bet is that if Square were to re-make FF1/2 for the NES, they'd do it from the ground up, and it wouldn't be all that much better.

So why is it that NES games got better as time progressed? Developers got more used to the platform, and learned to make games as efficiently as possible. But people don't really make games for the NES anymore, so all that talent has withered away, and it'd take years of programming NES games to get it back.

Of course, if any random doofus with a good knowledge of programming (let's say...me) were to make a re-make of FF1 in XNA for the PC (without memory constraints, but with the same color/resolution constraints), it'd easily be superior to the original, simply because I'd be able to do what used to take 10 developers a week in a day because of how easy/user friendly programming languages have gotten since the NES.

Well said :-) Exactly the reason why it'd be more interesting to see other FF games remade for the NES, such as FF7.  They'd have to be reduced.

I've looked everywhere on youtube for a clip of the battle against Safer Cloud of Darkness, but couldn't find any.  Maybe he doesn't even have Super Nova, I don't know, but I would imagine that the screen just flashes or something.

There are no summons in FF7 NES.  Therefore, there is no KotR.

I see. So much was sacrificed for the NES port. This intrigues me even more. Too bad there's no English version that I know of.

There's supposed to be a patch that translates the game into English.  I'm afraid I don't have a link, though.

EDIT: After searching ALL OVER the place, I've found a link!  I shall not post it here, however.

If it's just the patch and not the entire ROM, it'll probably be okay. May a moderator correct (and possibly smite) me if I'm wrong.

Since the game was never sold for profit, it's freeware.  Posting links to it is harmless

That one that you posted looks a lot more well done than the other one... I can't say I approve of playing Birth of a God at the Guard Scorpion fight, though, haha.

EDIT: I take that back after watching the transition between the 2nd and 3rd videos... LOL.

The link that I found has the entire game + the english patch + an NES emulator + cheat codes.  It's pretty complete, but that emulator bit troubles me...
