« on: 2010-01-21 22:51:09 »
Ever since build 3.5.5 i've been getting random crashes. 3.5.6 had the worst... Anyone else having this issue?

Currently thinking of switching to opera (as i will never use IE or Chrome)

So, whats everyones browser? :-D

I'm on XP pro 32bit, and Vista Home Basic and FF works like a charm on both, I know it's been known to crash when watching full screen flash vids off of the like of gametrailers and blip but that's about it, have a root through their support/forum and see if there's a solution there.

Always this site that causes the crashes for me. Other than that, Firefox works fine. Though ever since I downloaded the JSON add-on for Firefox, the crashes have been a lot less frequent.

Never had trouble with it. Are you using any problematic addons?

I switched to chrome the moment they created extension support. All I need is StumbleUpon, and a notifier for Google Reader and GMail, and I'm happy. (though I wish there could be a decent adblock extension for Chrome, but it's impossible the way extensions are currently implemented.

Can't you just switch to Iron then?

Google collects all sorts of information, ANONYMOUSLY, and doesn't really use it for insidious purposes. Chrome collects almost no information for Google, except for maybe crash reports and the like.

Iron = Chrome without the privacy issues.

Google Chrome is open source, so the code is available to the public. The Iron team take the latest issue of the source code, remove anything that sends data back to Google, and compiles it as Iron. Other than lacking the 'phone home' code and having a slightly different icon (and no longer calling itself 'Google Chrome'), it's the exact same program.

I like firefox because I can use the FireFTP add-on to connect to ftp servers with ease and free of charge, but I do hate some things about it; sometimes when I type an apostrophe, firefox takes that as a quick-find hotkey.. what the hell kind of stupid hotkey is apostrophe??

I've tested Google Chrome and it is, indeed, notably faster than any other browser (it's the only browser that can stream Hulu vids on my laptop at 1080p with minimal frameskip), but I don't like how it isn't compatible with my fingerprint reader software, or how it doesn't have the standard "File Edit View Tools etc" menu bars, or even the option to enable them. I also find that it doesn't have very many customizable options compared to Firefox and IE. It also strikes me as a rather "impatient" browser because if a site takes a long enough time to display, Chrome asks you if you want to kill the window or keep waiting.

Add-ons vs Performance is the tradeoff.

Not really qualified to reply - as I don't use 3.5x for anything other than testing website compatibility (I do not approve how they f***ed up the color profile support in it), but 3.1.something has worked very well for me.

Yes, I can make it crash. After it has been on for two or three full days, with 70+ tabs. I don't really blame it in that particular situation. In any case, by that time it's using 1+ GB of memory, probably mostly for the histories of all those tabs. It obviously does have a memory leak, but not bad enough to really bother me.

Chrome, Iron and Opera are all good browsers, but the severe lack of plugins is a buzzkill for me.

EDIT: Safari 4 is also very capable browser - the rendering engine is the same as in Chrome and Iron (might be bit more recent version, dunno), but it too has a acute lack of extensions, and of course the entire logic of the GUI is very Apple-like, which can be somewhat of a pain, when you use it in Windoze-environment.

Of course, a browser without Flesh Flash would be rather gimped. :-P

It's a 3.1.x, though.

Maybe thats it. Others (a lot should see their bug tracker haha) have issues with FF3.6.. i'm testing out iron. So far rendering images is slower then FF and opera.

Weird though, i used my IE8 for the first time (i've only used 7, when 8 came out i said screw it) it was pretty zippy.. then again i'm using alpha software and buggy firefox XD

I think Opera has some new rendering tech.

I haven't noticed any problem with pics on Chrome... maybe Iron is a couple of versions behind. I think I might start using Opera again, though, as I really appreciated its speed.

Has anyone here ever used Arora?

Firefox works fine for me with Adblock Plus, Firebug, Greasefire, Greasemonkey, LastPass, McAfee SiteAdvisor, Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant, NoScript, RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin, and SkipScreen.

Essential Things for me XD.

I absolutely hate Firefox.

Chrome all the way, so, so quick. No horrible memory leaks and dodgy plugins.

I'm trying out Iron as we speak.  There is a lot less stuff to get in the way, and it is significantly faster than IE.  It's even noticeably faster than Firefox.

No complaints so far, but we'll have to wait and see how easily I adjust to using it.
