looks like microsoft happens to have the synthesizer in a windows update package. :)

DOwnload extract the cab, add hardware, have isk, browse to the directory.

INstall, switch ffpc to xg midi. :)

I thought this game gave the option to install the yamaha xg midi package.
I tried to tell the difference between them in the config but if there was one it was very moot or maybe it just wasn't properly installed.

Can you upload a youtube vid of some back to back musics from ffvii (general midi vs xg)?

unless you bought the platinum collection version,  the one that comes with it does NOT work with XP.

however, the cab file i linked DOES.

The configurator is not a very good test of the difference. start a game. the bombing mission is a good example tune.

The GM version and the awe versions have a simple reverse cymbal.  The XG has a very cool swirling wooshing noise.

Okay so I've downloaded the 4mb woundtable but this is the first time I've ever manually applied an update to windows so do I move the contents of the extracted cab to a specific location or just drop the entire cab somewhere in sys32?

Also, the biggest difference I notice on the config test is that the XG midi that came with the game does not have any drums (at least for this test).

Not to sound like a downer, but do you really even need the synthesizer?   I mean unless you want those midi quality files on your pc...I don't think you can make them sound much better.

I'm running windows 7 x64 and I could see how this could be the issue, but I get to the last step where I choose the syth's .inf and I get an error message.

Sounds better(Define what is 'MIDI quality').  Though S-YXG100 does not work under Windows 2k/XP/Vista/7....  S-YXG50 4.x works under Windows 2k/XP, but not Vista/7.  (I once read about making Roland Virtual Sound Canvas work under Windows Vista/7 somewhere, but also I heard S-YXG50 wasn't working under Vista/7 at all..)
