Okay so my parents are giving me a choice. They will either buy me a guitar with an amp, or a drum set. Which one do you think I should get?

The one that you know how to play. If you know both and I'm you then I'd rather have guitar since my neighbors will kill me if I play the drums the whole day. Depends on your neighbors if they're def.

I don't know how to play either one of them. I mean I know a little of both but not that much.

Guitar.

Unless you want to join a band that really needs a drum player, I would choose the guitar.

EDIT: Reasons being that it's cooler, you can play more interesting stuff on it, and it's more portable.

Drums, everyone plays guitar. Even me. Horribly. Not enough people play drums. Fragment sentences.
Also, if you go guitar, a word of advice. You can get a digital amp that's about as good as a $1500 - $2000 tube for free by now. And, you know, you can get every digital amp that's that good for free, for various tones (generally no given amp is the best at any given tone, tube or digital). So, it might be better to get some fantastic speakers and, if necessary, a better soundcard, than to get an amp.

And to the seer of shadows - sure, if everything you play is in 4/4 you can go for interesting melodies on a guitar, while on drums you're a bit stuck. Now, try playing some DEP or Meshuggah polyrhythms on drums, or even Tool (for those few people who aren't incredibly skilled), and hey, interesting stuff on drums!

Well I'm probably going to be playing mostly metal, heavy metal, and screamo music. Maybe even join a heavy metal band considering my friends are trying to make one.

They have a guitarist and a bassist. They need a drummer and vocalist.

However, they're thinking of getting another guitarist so one of them can play rhythm and sing at the same time.

In the end, you should honestly go with whatever instrument you personally prefer. Although that's stating the obvious, every post so far has presumed you to be objective...

I know that if I was in this situation, I'd go for the guitar without a second thought about it.

Oh metal, well, that's sort of in drums favour, at least as it suggests a greater likelihood of rhythmic complexity. Man I'd be loathe to be a blues drummer. Oh but wait maybe you're LAZYBUNS (dun dun duunn).

I'd say pick up drums. Just cuz of the fact that *everyone* plays guitar.

And in my experience it's always a pain in the ass to get a drummer when you're starting a band, so in the end, the world needs more drummers.

Oh ok I expected to go find a video of some crazy guy doing dynamic tapping in one time signature with his right and playing in another time signature with his left but in the 3 whole seconds I spent looking I saw nothing.

Besides my own preference, and the fact that everyone plays guitar, the only proper advice I can give is, if you're currently completely objective on the matter, consider whether you notice melodies more or rhythms when listening to music.

Of course, the piano is superior to all in the instrumental world (you can tell that I'm a piano player, can't you?), but the original post specified a clear choice between guitar and drums only.

@The Seer of Shadows-Hmm, I couldn't really tell you were a piano player. Well I play a little piano when I was a kid but I stopped since I'm not dedicated to it anymore. I only finished grade 2 with my piano lessons.

I only play the piano and the clarinet. Clarinet sucks. Piano is far better.
I once played the viola, which is better than the clarinet, but still inferior to the piano.
