Nicknames.... why?
« on: 2006-04-28 22:46:34 »
What I mean in the Subject is not why do we have to have nicks
but why people have chosen that unique name as a way to identify themselves all Im asking people to do is put down their reasons for the nickname

I'll start with my own I am the one and only Thrashamatrix (I used to be Trashamatix)

The reason for my nick is my family used to be VERY poor and when I was born we had a small run down apartment and no heaters and in winter it was very cold so my mom used to take the trash cans out the streets and bring them in our little house and place them around me and her and burn stuff in there to try and ward off the cold.
So you see my family were POOR now Im not looking for sympathy, so dont post anything like that, please. Back to the topic, that is where "trasha" came from.

Matix comes from my favurite comic book Astrix and obalix (excuse spelling) I loved dogmatix so to earn money to buy the comics I used to walk the neighbourhoods dogs which got me ten bucks every two days took me ages but I now have every comic avalable :P

Now up untill a few days ago it was Trashamatix but then on a post someone (Cough.. Borde) typed my nick wrong (I felt like Dizuigiuo.... just messing dziugo) he/her typed it Thrashamatrix and I liked it so I changed it :wicked:

Well thats my story please people don't make me look stupid with an empty topic start writing your stories

I'm poor too. I am Midgar because it seemed like an original name, and I use it on other sites also, saves me time by having lots of them being the same. Midgar is a version of the name Midgard, which is a Norse...something. Sorry, I confused it with the Sephiroths with Midgar with the Jewishness...
By the way, is that by any chance Preston from Equlibrium? I noticed that the name refers to the matrix, but what is it?
Equlibrium is an excellent movie!

I once got something called the internet and then i was on msn (first time ever) because a friend of mine told me i could go online and chat with friends... then i came online and he was like "why dont you have a nickname?" and the first thing i heard when reading that was "CHAOSCONTROL!!" so i chose it. thats like (when was the dreamcast era again?) i think something about 6 years ago, dun think its the best nick but i kinda attached to it.

I hope not, since it's supposed to be from Norse mythology. Originally Miðgarðr - if the character set can deal with that.

The avatar? I thought that it's just Neo doing a pretty good Humphrey Bogart-impression. :P

And the quote pretty much confirms it; it's a Casablanca reference.

Hi Thrashamatrix, good to meet you. Quite a creative topic IMHO...

Around here, I'm known as odo324. It's an uncreative nick I started back in the early to mid '90s. The "odo" stands for a TV character I had admired back then, representing my confusion about what life really is for and my seriousness in discovering that truth (the character comes from a scifi show called Deep Space Nine). The 324 part? Well my ISP (at the time) wouldn't give me an 'odo' email so I had to append a number to it. 324 just seemed right; plus I actually liked typing that with my left hand (starting with my ever-so-lovely middle finger).

However, that was a very different life then the one I find myself in now. These days I typically go by the alias Takkun and I’ll probably change it here soon enough. Um, this one is a little hard to explain… Anyone here seen FLCL? It has got-to-be my favorite series off all-fucking-time! However, my fascination is not with the main character (who also holds the Takkun nick’) but in the attitude of the characters and the situations that occur as a result. To look at myself in that same manor can be compared to ‘finding an eviction notice on your font door’. Parts of my personality, fragments of my childhood, that just wont go away. In the series, the name Takkun also goes through a transition of sorts. Through Mamimi, the originator of the name, it is assigned to whoever is able to provide comfort to her (or perhaps distraction) vs. the harsh reality she so desperately tries to avoid. It’s a label in which she literally 'uses' in an effort to better herself.

Just noticing this myself… I suppose it’s safe to say that my nicknames have always been a reflection of the evolution for my personality at that period in time.

Nice to meet you to, I had  been thinking about putting down a topic like this for many days now, but I could never think of a way to introduce it, cause if I just said put you nick reasons I would get no replies, I think this is a ego topic I want to get thousands of views and houndreds of replies, I doubt it but it would be cool If I could get Qhimm and the moderators to put down their stories.

Tsk tsk tsk, double posting!
Well I supposed Midgar was after Final Fantasy, but before I knew about it. I just thought it was a nice name to have. You don't have to feel bad about this topic, there have been some in the past.
Qhimm's name is from his real name "Kim" I pronounce it "qwimm", but its supposed to be pronounced Kim.
Watch Equlibrium, its a great alternative to the Matrix, no bullet time, but it does have a white suit, guns made to beat at close range, saving dogs, and certainly feeling police.

Hmmm, i think that this is definitly an ego post, no two ways about it. I always thought qhimm was the alternate spelling of whim, as in a google definition: an odd or fanciful or capricious idea. That was my first impression of the site, that this was the place that you come to with the most random ideas and put them into action. (There are some really good random ideas here, even tiny ones like changing the character that is on the world map to tifa or barret etc). I never thought once that it was a actual name.

Anyway my name was a random word that was in my head at the time, it was my first time ever in a chat room and my friend told me not to put down my real name, just a nickname and spyrojyro came to mind and i used that. (I think that it originally came from a disney cartoon, and it was the name of a helicopter or something, i cant be sure beacause i have a terrible memory). The _tail came when i was opening a yahoo account in our computer class in secondary school, and i turned to one of the girls in the class and asked, if this was a name of some being in the world what would a spyrojyro have that would make it look cool? She said a tail, and it stuck.

Oh yeah, i never edit my name. Ive had it for years and years.

Okay don't get me wrong, when I say ego I don't mean it in a bad way, I Just wanted to get a topic which wasn't about complaing or modifications that people liked, but its also a way to understand where people are coming from and some people have truly astounding stories.  :o

Like yours for example, its your own and nobody in the world has the same reason or nick as you.
meanwhile Im still in secondary school maybe I will get something like that :)

I was Yami Pegasus during my Yu-Gi-Oh! obsession. I thought it would never end. Since then, I've gradually become "Covarr" because it's a play on my name, and will always represent me. As much as my personality might change, the name Covarr will never really become outdated, unless I change my real name.

My original nick back in the old internet was simply "Hal"

It was for two reasons.

1) It was the nickname of the character designer for "Macross" Haruhito Mikimoto
2) It was the name of the computer from 2001

Japanese cartoons and computers. That's me.

However, as the internet expanded, "Hal" was becomming a more difficult name to get a hold of. It was popular with others because of the 2001 refrence and so I changed it to hal-kun (-kun is a Japanese name ending, like -san [ex. Danel-san] but it's more "normalized")

hal-kun became halkun

I've heared it pronounced where it rhymed with "falcon" but it's supposed to be "hal-coon" <--- like that

My pen name, Hal Nicholas. comes from that.

Lyada comes from bad memory... I first read LoTR in grade 5, and like any kid that age Legolas was my favorite character. A few years latter I went on a 'camping trip' with scouts to a military boat where we got to make dog tags. The dog tags had 4 lines of text on them and I didn't know what the hell to put on them and I could remember Legolas' name, and I thought it was Lyada or something along those lines, so that is what I put.

I too went on a camping trip back in 7th grade or so, and the name of the place we stayed was some sort of American-Indian name.  My friends and I decided we should probably have Indian names... So one guy was Squatting Turtle, another guy was.... something Squirrel, I was Obese Bear.
lol, that was over a decade ago too... wow.
