FF7 Graphic+Music Problems
« on: 2008-02-21 22:29:09 »
Hello there, I just got the itch to play FF7 again, and discovered that there were many fun mods to try out and enhance the experience. But I'm having some boggling issues with graphics and music in the game. Here's what i've done:

-Install the game from original CDs
-Applied the following patches in the written order: Official 1.02 patch, The Saint's Hi-res patch, YAMP, HQ Cloud model, NPC Reconstruction 0.6, New spell patch by Zero.
-I then ran the configuration, setting direct3d nVidia TNT, and music to general midi (X-Fi Synth B)

The problems start after the intro movie (I see them fine with the truemotion codecs) but as the movie ends the screen fades to complete black until a text pop up occurs with barret saying something. I can then enter the game menu, and after exiting, the backgrounds along with the 3D models appear on screen, however all 3D objects have no textures and are drawn completely black except for eyes. Also if I move close to the soldiers, the game crashes to desktop as the game tries to initiate a battle. All along this, I get sound effects ok but music does not play at all. Here's my specs:

Intel Dual Core 2 2.67GHz
2.0 GBs RAM
SLI-Enabled GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB (two cards)
Creative X-Fi ExtremeMusic sound card
Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2

I'll keep trying to fix this, but I've reinstalled and reapplied patches in different order, or skipped some to try to eliminate one that doesn't work, but I always got some sort of problems. Any help is appreciated, I've not seen these kinds of issues in the FAQ.

Edit: Forgot to add, I've tried to run the game in both Single-GPU mode as well as SLI, in case this new technology is the cause of the problem. Didn't get any change. I'll also add this problem also occurs with only the official 1.02 patch applied with no other mods at all.

Yep, my original search had not turned up that post, since I looked at tech forum and not the tweaking one. It's the exact same problem that seems to have no solution sadly enough. 8-bit paletted textures are just simply not supported anymore on newer hardware/drivers, so from now on, FF7 will no longer work in D3D as people upgrade their computers.
