You don't open kernel2.bin directly.
When you save the kernel.bin it gives an option to update the names in kernel2.bin.
The best way is patching.
To add the Menu Overhaul changes to the kernel:

Tifa missing an arm sounds like an issue with Bloodshot's HQ Bike model.
Install the fix found HERE.
The Bike model and the Fix break two other PRP models: Dio and Employee 1.
I discuss one method of repairing the models in the tutorial.

My mistake!  Too many mods jumbled together in my noggin.
Still, I think Hardcore and Revival suit one another very well.
Aeris comes in very handy.  Her healing ability is especially useful.

It's looking in the root of your C:\ drive instead of the game folder.
That was an issue with an older version of FF7Music.
Download the newest version of FF7Music.

That's really strange.
These files aren't even part of the bootleg:

Earlier, willo182 was having troubles and posted an ff7_opengl.cfg with the line:
      mdef_fix = yes
That could potentially conflict with the Menu Overhaul.

EDIT: I mistakenly thought "Sense Limit" from the Overhaul was the same as "mdef_fix"

The Menu Overhaul works very well with most mods.
It's best to install other mods first. 
Then replace ff7.exe with the vanilla 1.02 ff7.exe.
Install Menu Overhaul last.

Even when I do a fresh install of FF7 with the Menu Overhaul, I continue to have the assist hand glitch.  Also, the assist arrows don't show with the error "ERROR: invalid color type
."
The hand and green arrow graphics are missing from the mod\DK folder: hand_1_00.png and hand_1_04.png.
I was able to create working versions by changing the color mode.
The shading around the hand causes some ugly jaggies.
The red arrow texture contains artifacts and the animation is off by a column.

I noticed something strange about all of the transparent avatars: Bloodshot, Darkfang and Nikfrozty.
In the merchant screen, the whole background behind the avatars flashes.
For the original avatars, it's just a small border around the portrait that flashes.
It seems that the transparent color cycles when in the buy and sell menus.

Gjoeulv is making a 'Normal difficulty' version of the Hardcore Mod.
He's keeping the Materia Boss Encounters and extra quest without the tougher fights.

An Hardcore version of Revival is awesome.
A purist, I resisted Revival for Normal FF7.
Starting again, I clumsily added Revival to Hardcore.
Now Aeris truly kicks butt.  I depend on her sticking around.
Revival is part of the Hardcore canon! 

The Hardcore mod has a special quest and weapon just for Aeris.
All the added story elements gel very well.
There's even an opportunity to script in a few responses to the Hardcore mod.

   For the field textures, Bootleg has 3 flavors:
   
  • 0 = Bootleg mashup of Yarlson, SL1982, FacePalmer. I chose each texture set based on my visual inspection.  I replaced FacePalmer light textures-- those numbered upwards of 15.
  • 1 = Yarlson's and SL1982's Field Textures.  Yarslson takes precedence over SL1982.  No FacePalmer, the rest are original textures.
  • 2 = FacePalmer Field Textures.  FacePalmer textures only.  There are a very few original textures left.

Use the /T switch to select the mode.  Otherwise Bootleg prompts a user.

Now that you've given the okay, I'll check into including some in Bootleg.

Adding the .tex file to the magic.lgp is the most direct route of implementing a new limit texture.

The limit .png texture goes here if you're using the Remix:
    .\Final Fantasy VII\textures\Limit\limit\jo_b03_00.png

I believe that the .tex file in the .lgp has been altered with an Hex editor to point to the textures folder.
I haven't found much info on the textures folder because it's a deprecated feature.

Grim,
When running Bootleg, it's best to have all of the mods listed in the Bootleg_Readme.txt file.

There are pictures in the forum of that first battle scene with updated graphics.
Unfortunately, that mod is unreleased.
If you happen upon a texture pack containing those scenes, please let me know!

I noticed the FacePalmer textures aren't as vividly colored as Yarlson's.
But FacePalmer fixed those annoying spots where the scenery overlapped in the wrong spot.
That happened a lot in the Shinra building.
I visually compared every texture from Yarlson and SL1982 with FacePalmer and selected the set I found most appealing.  I also replaced almost all of the lighting textures (15 and up) with those from Yarlson and SL1982.
I've automated the process in Bootleg.

This really makes FF7 look amazing.
