✨ Full 16 Must Install Mods
Below is a list of 16 mods that will amaze you.
Once installed, go to the "My Mods" tab and configure them by double-clicking on them.

  • Cosmo Memory 💎Thread
→  These HQ sounds are designed to immerse you in the game world and create a sense of realism (if you want vanilla SFX, you've got to disable this mod).
  • AavockESUI 💎🆕
→ Choose the configuration based on your preferences. Requires Enhanced Stock UI mod (alternative: Finishing Touch mod for FF12 inspired UI or else Retouch mod for Remake battle UI).
  • Enhanced Stock UI 💎Thread
→ Backbone for all modern UI themes. Required for AavockESUI, Finishing Touch, Retouch (if you're looking to play without ESUI+AavockESUI, I'd suggest checking out the mod SYW Unified Menus and Fonts).
  • Cosmos FMV (30 FPS) 💎Thread
→ Enable "Ninostyle Chibi" + "Ninostyle"
  • 60/30 FPS Gameplay 💎Thread
→ Enable "Full 60 FPS" + "NinostyleHD animations" for breathing animation otherwise select "Original animations" + Disable "Field mode 60 FPS Fix"
  • Ninostye Chibi Fixes and Additions 💎🆕Thread
→ Enable "Facial Animation" if using SAC/UBF + "Dynamic Weapons Cloud" + "Cloud Alt. Outfits>Vanilla Cloud" for OG gloves (if you're bothered about the mouth you can just get rid of it with Mouth Replacer mod above Ninostyle Chibi Fixes and Additions).
  • Ninostyle Battle 💎Thread
  • SYW Unified Battle Textures 💎Thread
  • AxlRose Blender 💎Thread
→  Place it under SYW Unified Battle Textures.
  • Ninostyle Chibi 💎Thread
→  Disable "L@zar0's upgrades" + Disable "Efryt's Little Work" + Enable "Dynamic Weapons BETA".
  • Cosmos Limit Break 💎🆕Thread
→ Enable "Upscaled + Extended Backgrounds" + "Background Uncrop" + "Recommended 99% Animated Fields". If you get a slowdown, just set the last option to "Light" (hopefully, any CLB field script issues will be sorted and implemented in SAC/Echo-S 7/New Threat or any other mod that changes the script chunk. Alternative: SYW Unified Fields Textures).
  • Shinra Archaeology Cut 💎🆕Thread
→ If you're after a closer-to-OG experience, go ahead and enable "Gameplay Mode Vanilla mode" + "Advanced Facial Animation" + Disable "Music fixes" if you using FFNx FF7Music + Disable "Opening FMV w/ Text Crawl" (Note: vanilla HQ SFX built in, closer to PS1. SAC offers a plethora of features that are worth exploring during a 2nd Playthrough with Archaeology Mode; SAC 60 FPS fixes available with Chthonic Harmony mod. Otherwise if interested in Voice Acting for your 2nd Playthrough then try this different retranslation Echo-S 7 in tandem with the mods Mouth Replacer, Universal Blink Fix and Ninostyle Chibi Fixes and Additions).
  • FFNx FF7Music 💎Thread
→ Enable "Override opening movie audio" + "Synchronize Music" for Cloud's subconscious music bug fixed (Note: this mod contains superior PS1 bugless files. The OGG tracks in the standard PC version have lower clarity and volume due to higher compression, as well as looping issues and music bugs compared with PS1 version, the FFNx FF7Music mod fix all these issues. Alternative: ReMusic mod for Remake OST or check the Soundtrack Options thread).
  • SYW Unified Minigame Textures 💎Thread
  • SYW Unified Spells Textures 💎Thread
  • Cosmos Gaia 💎🆕Thread
→ The world has never looked this good! (Note: This mod turns on automatically Advanced Lighting and Analog Control even if those are off. If you are not interested in the Advanced Lighting and in true widescreen 16:9 worldmap overhaul that re-implements terrain rendering, analog movement, camera controls, real-time lighting and extended view distance then use: SYW Unified WorldMap Textures)

You are now ready to start. However, if you want to tweak and change some of the mods that are not to your taste, or simply prefer a different style, or just want to go wild, then continue with the optional mods below. Also, you are free to look for more mods in Browse Catalog tab and play as you wish. It goes without saying that there are at least one hundred mods that can enhance your experience. One such mod is Postscriptthree's Tweaks, featuring Multi-Linked Slots and In-Battle PHS just to name two amazing features. Another gem is New Threat 2.0 which needs no introduction: a gameplay mod that changes the entire experience. Or the most recent and entertaining CloudReplacer.

Important: Remember, you can't usually have multiple mods that strive to achieve the same thing. Also, the Qhimm thread links above are used for reference and introduction, you still need to download the mod from the 7th Heaven mod manager, search for the mod name in the Browse Catalog tab and install it from there. Whatever is not installed from the catalog is not supported. The idea behind creating this list is to make life easier for the end users, since not everyone is an expert.

Optional but Amazing Mods
Spoiler: show
You will also find 30 optional mods below, if you want to activate these mods you must check the "Compatibility Table" section below, in terms of not having mod conflict. Remember: you can't usually have multiple mods that strive to achieve the same thing. Search for the mod name in the 7H Browse Catalog tab and install it from there. Mods are updated regularly, so something might change regarding compatibility. Please always read the descriptions. Once installed, go to the "My Mods" tab and configure them by double-clicking on them.

  • Echo-S 7 🚨Thread
→  Full Voice Acting Mod! Set Music to "OFF" if using FFNx FF7Music. Music volume to 65% + Voice volume to 75% in 7H Settings>Game Launcher Settings (Note: vanilla HQ SFX built in, closer to PS1. Also, disable Wizard Staff mod since already built in. Unfortunately, Echo-S has not yet fully implemented the "Field Mode Fix" from the 60 FPS mod, but it will not affect your playthrough. I recommend using Echo-S 7 in tandem with the mods Universal Blink Fix and Ninostyle Chibi Fixes and Additions.)

Game Driver Settings
For an enhanced gameplay ensure as well to have these settings ON in 7th Heaven Settings>Game Driver Settings.
  • Graphics API: Auto (NVIDIA → DX11, AMD → DX12, Linux → Vulkan)
  • Resolution: Native monitor resolution
  • Window mode: Fullscreen
  • Aspect Ratio: Widescreen 16:9 (Report bugs here — It's not bug-free. If you picky just use Native 4:3 option)
  • Antialiasing: OFF (no benefit in FF7 if you are already using internal resolution 4x or 6x)
  • Anisotropic: ON (yes, always ON in any game that has any kind of 3D in it)
  • V-Sync: OFF (turn it ON only if suffering from screen tearing, to avoid screen tearing ensure your display refresh rate is at its max setting)
  • Advanced Lighting: ON
  • Analogue Controls: Turn ON (unfortunately as of now, this also activates analogue camera controls in battle, which can have some unwanted effects on camera movement in certain battles and prevent you from toggling target assist.)
  • Gamepad Auto Run: ON
  • Steam Compatibility: ON (if you want to unlock achievements during your playthrough turn this flag ON, and ensure that Steam is running in background)
  • Internal Resolution Scaler: 4x (for 1080p and 4K that's OK. Otherwise, you'll need to increase and find a value suitable for your screen resolution. FYI IR it's a super-sampling function and its sweet setting is 4x or 6x depending on the screen resolution)
  • NTSC-J Gamut Mode: ON (noteworthy, but not ultra-compatible with all the mods)
NTSC-J Gamut Mode - What is it? This feature simulate the color gamut of the 1990s Japanese television sets that FF7 and FF8 were originally designed for. Some info about it:
For the end-user: to get the proper difference, you would want to also calibrate your monitor to 9300k color temperature.
For the modder: this Gamut Mode is appropriate for: Vanilla FF7; Mod assets that are upscales of the original assets; Mod assets made from scratch where the modder used the original assets as a color reference without doing a gamut conversion.
The modder that wants to "support" NTSC-J has to convert their textures using this tool. Then convert their PNGs with this tool and afterwards convert eventually to DDS.
Also: Some basic notion about color gamut.

FF7 Modding Scene | A Bite of History

Modding Scene
✨ A Bite of History ✨
The Legacy • The Heroes • The Future

A Legendary Milestone

Square Enix, formerly known as Squaresoft, released Final Fantasy VII (JP) for the Sony PlayStation 1 on 31 January 1997 (PC: 1998; PC Re-release e-Store: 2012; PC Steam: 2013.) In its first decade, FFVII sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, including several reprints. The first Final Fantasy in the series to use full-motion video, pre-rendered 3D backgrounds, and richer 3D graphics and sound design, critically acclaimed for its story and music. One of the most technically advanced RPGs of its time, FFVII was a huge commercial success, completely redefining the Final Fantasy franchise and helping to cement Sony's then-nascent position in the home console market with the original PlayStation.

The Eternal Wall of Fame

The universe of mods is vast and ever-expanding. The campus of the growing modding scene can be traced back to the creation of Qhimm's website and forum in 1999.

Too many are part of the eternal "wall of fame": Qhimm, Ficedula, NFITC1, Alhexx, Aali, Iros, myst6re, vertex2995, Cosmos, TrueOdin and so on; the dedication and perseverance of the community, together with the constant evolution of hardware and software, has allowed for high level results. With the advent of a new advanced driver called FFNx, created by TrueOdin in late 2020, there have been real generational leaps. With the team behind FFNx, we experienced Cosmos Lighting: a feature that adds real-time lighting and shadows; Cosmos FMV: a character replacement mod for CG footage; Cosmos Limit Break: backgrounds extended for true widescreen; Cosmos Gaia: a worldmap rendering and analog controls overhaul; and even a day/night time cycle feature, all thanks to Cosmos; the music layer has also been completely reworked to bring you the best audio experience as well as a new dubbing system by TrueOdin and a ton of music enhancements by myst6re including OpenPSF; last but not least the 60 FPS progressive mod finalised by vertex2995 that breathed new life into the game, once you try it you will never go back. You will love discovering the many other features! Special thanks go to the following specialists who stepped into the scene: TrueOdin, Cosmos, vertex2995, myst6re, but also to all the modders who, free of charge, give us new excitement and contribute daily to the modding scene... in this regard, it is obligatory to mention Satsuki Yatoshi with the SYW mod and its multi-technique AI upscaling for all the graphics components.

To every modder, tester and silent contributor —
Thank you. You are the reason FF7 looks and feels more alive in 2025 than ever before.

The Future is Bright

Cooking in the Kitchen:
✦ Echo-S 7 and SAC merged mod
✦ Cosmos FMV II + new updates
✦ And countless bugfix from the most talented modders

I'm a little confused with regard to the Must Install list. If Echo-S 7 is installed, I'm informed that I cannot use the 60/30 FPS Gameplay's recommended "Field Mode Fix" due to incompatibility with Echo. Moreover, Echo-S seems to include it own VA-friendly soundtrack feature that I assume would conflict with the recommended "Reunion - FF7 PSX OST" soundtrack mod. Should I simply opt for whatever I personally prioritize when it comes to these, or is there a way to make all of them work in concert?

I apologize if I'm overlooking something idiotic, but one of my promises to myself when I bought a new laptop was that I'd christen it with a run of souped-up OG FF7, and I want to make sure I'm doing things the right way.

You can use whatever music you want with Echo-s. Just turn off Echo-s' music. You can use 60fps mod with Echo-s, but you cannot use the field animation fixes with it. it's like 4 fields to fix minor animations, you're not missing anything.

Great list, it's been super helpful!!  One thing:  IFRIT constantly throws out an error complaining it can't confirm compatibility options with Echo-S.  I don't just mean when its installed.  Everytime 7th Heaven runs, a mod is changed, or I try to run the game.  Since I use ESUI + ReTouch, I finally just gave up and removed it.  You have any idea what the problem might have been?

This is the error:

Mod IFRIT - FF7 Interface Tweaks, setting Menu Tweaks - no compatible option can be found. The following mods all restrict how it can be configured:

IFRIT - FF7 Interface Tweaks | (4cbb8a22-3f87-483d-ab8c-81089a875f23)
[Tsunamods] Echo-S 7 | (09e81530-3f09-46b9-831b-df431b8f319c)

EDIT:  The problem is with setting Ifrit to ESUI compatibility mode.  If I switch it to Stock or SYW mode, the error goes away.  That makes me sad.  I could live without Retouched, but I really like ESUI.  Looks like I have to choose between it and Ifrit.  Honestly... is there any reason to choose Ifrit?  I'm not really seeing any.

Long story short: yes. You must choose between IFRIT and ESUI + RT/FT. Just updated the list.

IFRIT it's for who does not want to change much the OG battle UI.
But IFRIT might be obsolete very soon if a new mod appears.

EDIT: You can now install the new mod AavockESUI and forget about IFRIT, ensure Enhanced Stock UI mod is enabled as well.

Thank you for taking the time to answer.  After dabbling with both, I decided to stick with ESUI.  This was a great list and just the thing to tide me over while i wait for "Rebirth" to drop in 2 weeks.   :D

I'm a noob but really love The Cetra Project's two mod .iros.  Generally, are there any grossly incompatible mods or mod categories that I should avoid using in tandem (i.e. World Textures, Field Textures, etc.)?  Is it ill advised to use mods like ESUI or Echo-S in conjunction with Cetra?  Thanks!

You can't have multiple mods that strive to achieve the same thing.
In the case of The Cetra Project 3D Model Pack mod, as far as you don't have any other character field models pack you will be good to go.

The first five options, but not the others.

EDIT: You can now install the new mod Nitpick, you'll find it on 7H.

EDIT: I have gotten some answers on discord from some very helpful people, including OP, so I'm just going to leave this up and add in the answers in case anyone with similar questions see this

Thank you so much for this! While it's never been easier to play a modded FF7, it can still be confusing because there are so many options now, and the mod scene is moving so fast ever since Remake came out that even looking up mod information from a year ago can be out of date, and so much of it is trapped on discord now anyway.

I've been annoying people on discord with questions, so I thought I'd finally make an account here lol.

One quick question, then a longer one:

First, are you sure that you're supposed to toggle Ninostyle HD animations in the 60fps mod if you're using the chibi mod? The option on the 60fps mod is for the HD version of ninostyle (the one with the battle models not the chibi ones). Wouldn't the chibi version use original animations since the character proportions are the same? I'm not a modder or anything so I could be way off base here.

The answer is: Yes, if you're using ninostylechibi, you need to toggle ninostylehd animations ON in the 60fps mod

Second, are there any field model mods with realistically proportioned characters that are also resized so they don't look so tiny? I saw that the chaos mod had a toggle for this but it (or some combination of echo-s and the 60fps mod) causes crashes at a few points (jail in shinra HQ, Beach at Costa del Sol so far, also sephiroth is bugged in general with the 60fps mod). I tried using the resizer in the chaos mod by keeping it enabled, keeping resize on, and just putting it at the bottom of the load order, and it sort of worked with Moddershaven and NinostyleHD, but had a few animation issues and still had the same crashes as using Chaos alone.

So anyway, am I missing something obvious or are there really no mods with realistic proportioned characters at correct heights? I would like to try playing like a demake/remake style playthrough once but having hobbit sized characters with human proportions walking through doors at half height and having chairs tower over them is totally immersion killing.

This was complicated, but the short answer is no, not really. As I said, the Chaos model overhaul has a resizer toggle, but using it causes crashes at specific points, and on top of that the Sephiroth model is currently bugged at 60fps anyway. I was trying for a remake/demake theme on my current playthrough (so voice acting, remake style interface, realistically proportioned character models), so my current solution is to use the moddershaven model pack on nexusmods since they're realistically proportioned and mostly based off of Remake (though Tifa and Aerith seem to be based on Advent Children), and keep Chaos "on" but low in the mod order so I can use the resizer toggle to size up the moddershaven models. It mostly works, though some models are either too big or small (also some of the models are cameos from other games. Dio is Zangief, occasionally minor NPCs are protags from other Square RPGS lol). Yes, there are crashes, I'm using PHS anywhere and saving as much as I can lol.

I've only seen footage of this so I'm not sure, but it looks like The Reunion mod uses a modified version of the chaos model pack, and it does look like they're resized? I honestly can't tell, but that might be something to check out if you're obsessed with this (though obviously you're not going to be able to use voice acting or most of the other mods on 7h.)

I have been told that it is possible, just tedious to resize models in ff7, as you'd have to manually do it for all field models on all 700 fields. No promises and I have no idea what I'm doing, but I may start looking into making some kind of generic "realistic model resize mod" that could be used with model packs like NinostyleHD or Moddershaven.

Oh sorry, quick third question. I can't find the Project Berzerker model mod on nexus. Is it possible to link it for me? I've found literally everything else listed but that.

I don't know if the name changed at some point, but Gaia-7 on nexusmods IS the "project berzerker model mod". I kept seeing it referred to as "the project berzerker mod" so I was confused.

Thanks again to all the people who helped me on discord!

Thanks Eva for testing out. As of now, you can additionally download "60 FPS Animations for ChaOS" mod which provides 60 FPS Sephiroth fix for the ChaOS mod.

Just a heads-up: the option Resized Models of ChaOS is still in BETA, so there might be a few bugs here and there; it isn't meant to be used with other character model mods. It'd be great if you could collect all the issues and report them in the ChaOS thread on Qhimm or Discord so the author can take a look. But for now, I'd say it's probably best to avoid using resized.

I'm new to modding FF7 and want to play with the Shinra Archaeology Cut translation and the Echo-S 7 soundtrack (no VA). Is there any combination of settings that will allow these mods to coexist in this way?

As things stand... Unfortunately, that's not an option right now. But there are plenty of options.

I was actually looking at this one as an alternative. Does it look like it would work with your MUST INSTALL mods (other than the music one of course)? It looks like it's just straight up replacing files rather than installing through 7th Heaven.

They didn't create an IRO file to import in the 7th Heaven mod manager. But let us know if it works.
The one you linked is based on the mod "OST Music Remastered by FinalFanTim", which is listed in the thread I mentioned. You'll find it on 7th Heaven, just search through the Browse Catalog tab.

Sure, I'll post my results after I try it. Waiting for the game to go on sale before I buy it since I'm not planning to play it for another few months.

I ultimately ended up just going with the one in 7th Heaven since I couldn't figure out how to get the other one imported on Steam Deck.

Where can I find the Dynamic Weapon Fix you recommend? Searched 7th Heaven, Nexus, and Google with no luck.

On 7H. Just being renamed. The thread was updated long ago about it. The new mod name is: "Ninostyle Chibi Fixes and Additions"
