Is there any solution to enabling FSAA for the newer card and forceware driver? because i can't install saint high res patch my screen is only 1024x768.
I have tried the RivaTuner config edit in the first page, but i still got the grid line if i use fsaa.
I have geforce 8600gt using 177.79 forceware and WinXp.
Any solution?

OK so I'm having the problem where the movies don't play, but if i hit enter I can get to the new game/continue screen. the problem is obviously the movies don't play and after i hit newgame it just goes black and no matter how long i wait nothing ever happens. I don't think its the movie path cause i've got it set to the cd's location and i've even put the movies on my hard drive and changed the path to that location and no matter what it still will not run them.(side note, I can run the movies in windows media player, the game just won't do it) I have installed the 1.02 xp patch which actually allowed me to even run the program, but i still can't play it. I have xp service pack 2.

System Specs:
intel pentium 4 dual core 2.8 ghz
ATI Radeon HD 2400 series 256mb
2gigs of ram
certainly you'll need more information but we can get to it then
I seriously need to play this game again

If only your problem was covered in the first post of the FAQ (the thread you're posting in)... Damn, it looks like a problem that should be solved and put there!

As much as I appreciate your sarcasm, i've read the thread and i've installed all the different patches and what not and it still doesn't work. If anyone has any ideas as to something stupid i may have done I would greatly appreciate you sharing them.

I'd suggest you to reinstall the FF7 to fix the movies path. 85% of the people forget to put the ending backslash at the end of the path, and then helplessly try to get the movies working by installing the Truemotion codec over and over again.

ah good catch, did forget to add the last slash when i changed it back to running off the cd, however it didn't make a difference. I just uninstalled and reinstalled ff7 and all the patches and what not, but it still hasn't made a difference.

If you're positive that installing the upside-down movie fix was successful, you might want to check other installed codecs. Especially ffdshow needs a special care - open it's video configuration, scroll down and find the Truemotion1/2 entry -> set it to disabled.

not only did i try that, but after it didn't work just for good measure i uninstalled ffdshow entirely, this is my last post for a while, goin to work for 4 hrs

Well, there is also a drastic measure - uninstall all the codecs (and I mean all of them), unregister the Truemotion2.0 (find tm20dec files in system32 folder and unregister them using "regsvr32 /u tm20dec.ax" - it can also be named tm20dec.1 or similar). Restart your system.

After these steps, install the movie player from InstallCD, check if it works in FF7. If it doesn't, use the upside-down movies patch and double-check that the movie path in registry is correct (points to the directory with FMVs and ends with a backslash).

Now you can install your other codecs.

omg I love you, i did the "drastic measure" and the movies play, but I've got no back ground after the movies are done, just characters, so i'm not real sure what to do about it, I didn't see a help on the first page for no background and i don't remember if there was one somewhere else in the thread so i'll just make sure i didn't forget anything, thank you so much for you help

*EDIT* nvm I got the background to work, thanks for the help now i can enjoy this game like i did years ago

i had a problem that i have solved myself. i will describe it and hope it helps someone else.

Problem: After pressing New Game the cutscene plays and a black screen comes and i cant do anything.

#1 i first solved this by a using a savegame.

Same problem occured when first entering Gold Saucer, after cutscene game goes black screen.

Solution: I uninstalled all codecs and problems just solved.

here are my specs:  alienware, windows xp, duol-core processor, sli dual nvidia 8800gt's(i run ff7 using single gpu).  here are the mods i use: official update 1.02, saints hi res patch, yamp(battle swirl fix, bike fix), cloud hi res battle model, npc replace, better hands.
here is my question.  finally, after nvidia driver 177 were released, i could use saints hi res patch, without getting all black models.  they finally fixed 8 bit texturing(which also helps plays twisted metal 2 pc, btw).  ok, here is my question, though.  i want to run fsaa, and was wondering if anyone thinks that is possible?  i tried replacing the fsaa codes with the ones on the first page of this sticky, and all of those create the green grid lines when using fsaa.  then i reverted to the original fsaa modes.    two of those are actually not that bad.  2x1 does not create any green lines, however you can still see the grid.  6xS  also doesn't create the green lines, however the grid is more noticeable.  does anyone think it is possible to add or alter fsaa modes for nvidia 8800, driver 177, so that ff7 would work with fsaa, without the grid?

I couldn't get any of the video patches to install. I'd get an error message stating that some executable could not be found. Any tips? If this is a noob question, I totally understand if I get yelled at.

software rendering mode sucks...but at least it works.

win xp professional sp3
intel core 2 duo
nvidia 8800gt w/ 175.19 drivers
k-lite codec pack standard

Well it would be a start to tell us which executable wasn't found.  I'll assume ff7.exe
In which case, what are the patching files you are trying to run?  If it can't find the exectutable, then try running it from the program file folder.  Eg, C/Program Files/final fantasy7 and see how it goes.

1) ff7betap1.exe (and the setup file within that archive), the upside-down movie patch
2) truemotion codec and compression toolkit, duck.exe. I got this from http://fem1.uniag.sk/Miroslav.Jezik/ff7ncopam.html as a source. I'm pretty sure I got this link from these forums...

I've already tried running them in the same directory as FF7.exe. I always see an error message stating that the exe could not be found and to check the file path.

The game plays fine in software rendering mode. The opening credits movie is the only thing that I have noticed that fails to play. Also, I uninstalled the XP patch that everybody hates. Is that all I need to do to preserve my system files?

Sorry for the nub questions, again. I have already begun sorting through some of the other pages on this thread, yet I'm still not so sure how some solutions would apply to my nvidia 8800gt. Will changing the video card settings via rivatuner affect my other games?

Hi guys! :-D

I've recently acquired a copy of Final Fantasy VII for the PC after having my PS game "mysteriously disappear".  (Looooong story behind that.) Anyway, after finding out about all these awesome patches and mods, I decided to try a couple out and replay a great game in an even greater quality. I've run into a couple problems though, and I was wondering if anyone could help me out. If similar problems have been addressed before, please forgive me and my inability to wade through the myriad of helpful posts.

My first problem is remarkably similar to Salk's on page 13 of this very thread. I tried playing with the high res patch, and while I have to say that the character models looked sweet and clean, the evident pixelization (Not a real word, I know) of the backgrounds kind of peeved me off. I reinstalled my game and tried playing it without the high res patch at a smaller resolution, and I got kind of a reverse effect. The backgrounds looked nice, but the character models looked all fuzzy. I was wondering if it's possible to get the models looking as clean as they do in the high res patch without creating grid lines or messing with the font.

My second issue is once again touched on in this thread (On page 13, what do you know?) by the user lambie, but no one has answered him. I'll just quote his post:

"At the beginning, where the train just stopped and the guards were attacked, that scene is all black, and then the word bubble "blah blah follow me" shows up, and I hit the menu key and back, everything is back. So I keep on moving forward, when the group is about to enter the reactor building, Cloud turned small and stayed at a corner while the movie plays. I played through the whole stage, and when Cloud was leaving the reactor, some dude fell, and Cloud went to give a hand, then they both freeze at the corner of my screen as the movie plays without sound... I tried to find the problems within the forum, but I just can't find the answer."
I managed to fix the sound issue by turning off the "emulate ramp" option in ficedula, but everything else described in lambie's post applies.

I have a legitimate copy of Final Fantasy VII for the PC, as well as having the 1.02 official patch, the chocobo patch, battle swirl fix and minigames patch, new spell name kernel2 and ficedula's music patch. I'm running on windows XP Home edition with an Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT card. I've chosen maximum installation.

If these issues have been resolved elsewhere, please direct me to them and then whack me over the head with a stick/Banhammer.

Thanks a bunch, and congratulations on making FF7 an even greater game than it already is!

Edit: Alright, alright I'm a complete noob. I found the answer to lambie's problem. Geez, it was even on the first page of the tech support forum. Man, do I feel stupid. My first query still stands, though.

Re: Ms dos 16 bit thingy

Quote from: Fezza
When i install FF7 and the codec install pops up i click on the yes button to install it and then it minimizes and comes up and error say:

16 bit Windows Subsystem

C;\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The systen file is not siutable for running Ms-Dos and Microsoft Windows Applications. Chosse close to terminate the application.

                 CLOSE           IGNORE

I usually just click on ignore but im not sure whether or not the codecs install or not.....any ideas

Yeah, I've experienced this problem before myself with other applications.

Resolution (from MS):

1. Insert your WINDOWS CD into the CD drive or DVD drive.

2. Click Start, and then click Run.

3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.

4. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:
Code: [Select]
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\command.co_ c:\windows\system32\command.com
exit

5. Start or install the program. If the issue is resolved, do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go to the next step.

6. Note: The Command.com file is not edited or created in this in the following process. Because of this, you may have to expand it from your Windows XP CD-ROM.

Start Notepad.

7. In Notepad, type the following entries:
Code: [Select]
dos=high, umb
device=%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\himem.sys
files=40

8. On the File menu, click Save As.

9. In the File Name box, type Config.nt, and then click Save. Close the Config.nt file.

10. On the File menu, click New.

11. In the new blank document, type the following entries:
Code: [Select]
@echo off
    lh %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\mscdexnt.exe
    lh %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\redir
    lh %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\dosx
    SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330 T3

12. On the File menu, click Save As.

13. In the File Name box, type Autoexec.nt, and then click Save. Close the Autoexec.nt file.

14. Start Windows Explorer. Locate the Config.nt file, right-click the Config.nt file, and then click Copy.

15. Right-click the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 folder, and then click Paste.

16. Locate the Autoexec.nt file, right-click the Autoexec.nt file, and then click Copy.

17. Right-click the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 folder, and then click Paste.

18. Locate the Command.com file, right-click the expanded Command.com file, and then click Copy.

19. Right-click the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 folder, and then click Paste. Restart your computer.

Hey, so I have the exact same problem, but when i tried this, it didn't solve anthing, is there another step I'm missing, or what? When I did the first step in the command prompt, for every one it said that it "can not open input file: D:\i386\command.co_."(or whatever the file was). I am not sure if it is supposed to say that, so I did the other steps. And nothing changed. As well, the command.com file, where is that originally, isn't it in system32 folder. Anyways, I would really appreciate help, thank you!

I can't seem to find an answer anywhere,  so sorry if this has been addressed before.

I run Windows Vista 64-bit.  I have a legitimate copy of the Eidos Platinum Collection edition of FF7, and I've properly installed V1.02, Saint's, and as far as I know TruMotion and Laptop Keypad.

Most everything runs fine or at least up to par with everyone else who runs Vista, except that my background is pretty screwed up, but it's not black.  It's horribly, horribly....green.

Opening scene right after train.

First reactor, after naming Barret and FMV looking at reactor.

Also, my Cloud char carried over into at least one FMV, though that really doesnt matter much to me.

Any help would be appreciated.

I've  been having issues with the video playback also.

I am running windows vista.

You need to install the truemotion 2.0 codec

what most people experience are codec and filter interference, if you cant play any of the videos back directly in windows media player then that is your issue.

you can download an app called g-spot, its a codec tool which can be found here " http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ "

when you open that tool you need to open one of the fmv's for the game in the program and check which filters/codecs are being used.

there is a button on the lower left of the window that has the numbers 1 and below that 2 and 3, and also to the right of them 1-3 for audio and 1 and 2 for audio/vid.

once you press 1 under vid you should see the following

"src ->>(A) avi splitter > (B) true motion 2.0 decompressor > (C) video renderer" followed by status not yet rendered.

if it does not show this, you can contact me for a more detailed guide, if this does show proceed to press button 2 and 3 and if the video plays then you are good to go, this should solve all your video playback issues for everyone using vista.

you should only have what looks like this.

Just had to register here to say thank you for all the useful information provided in this thread - I'd all but given up hope of replaying this classic in full anti-aliased glory, but have now finally managed to get it working.

The first problem I encountered was with the intro and cutscenes not working, which I remedied by downloading an installing the Truemotion codec from here (The TM2.0 codec that comes with the game would not install, regardless of fiddling with config.nt and such)

Next up was the dreaded grid lines. Initially I had them with or without FSAA, but installing the official 1.02 patch allowed me to run the game in hardware mode for the first time, however, enabling FSAA made them return and also caused the text to become garbled. None of the Rivatuner solutions worked, what did was installing the High res patch from here.

Now the game works perfectly.

My relevant system info: XP SP3, 8800GT 512MB card with 180.48 drivers.

Hope this is of help to others; I know the information is outlined elsewhere.. but I know from my own experience that it can be very difficult to find the right the solution when there are so many different ones floating around.
