As soon as I did this and edited the registry accordingly the videos stopped playing when i ran the game.

Im sure i crakced it right but im not sure why the videos have stopped playing. Any ideas?

After you edit the registry, a common error is at the end of it, the registry key for the movies should read something like this:

Code: [Select]
C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\data\Movies\

That's mine, a common mistake looks like this:

Code: [Select]
C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\data\Movies

Notice the difference? When you edit that registry key, you must make ABSOLUTELY sure that you include that \ at the very end of the key, after the name of the actual folder you put the movies in.

Also what is the denomic demon crash

The Cosmo Canyon crash, you'll know it if it happens to you, or simply search for the "Cosmo Canyon crash" and youre sure to get at least 50 results for that, suffice to say, it sucks, and if you do have it, there is no one sure solution.

and what is the hand patch for? Thanks.

Just a nifty little thing that adds hands to the characters instead of the ackward looking blocks, but a nice aestetic touch-up.

Haha, and the back and forth of myself and Steele continues!

As I presume youre playing with XP, if youre having a crash, try running the game as bare bones as you can (ie maximum install, movies on the HD, and ONLY the chocobo patch added) and that should keep crashes to a minimum, and if needed run in compatibility mode (but as I know nothing about that I wouldnt know, haha).

If someone here found a way to import those models back into the game I would be youre personal assassin for it! Hahaha, j/k, but that does look awesome, tis a shame theres not much that its good for except looking at.  :(

ive already tried using software renderer.  same hing still happens.  ive tried it with and without the patches installed, ive tried it with  95/98/me/nt4.0/2000 compatibility mode, ive copied the movies to my harddrive and i still cant get past that bit.quote]

He already tried running the vids off the HD he said, so it may be that he has a bad copy of the videos. Try opening them with Media Player or WinAmp (whichever your preference) and see if you can play them all. If you cant, you have a bad video, beyond that and my previous post, I wouldnt know what to say.

Try quarter screen mode, Software mode, both at once, try maximum install, maybe those'll help. Beyond that, Id say you got one hell of a pickle to get past there, never heard of that one, but then FF7 does like to crash anywhere and everywhere. Best of luck!

Archive / FF7 for PC: Won't even install
« on: 2004-06-09 16:38:30 »
I had that problem with FF8 before a few days back when I wiped my drive to upgrade from 2000 to XP (the fact that you cant upgrade from 2000 Professional to XP Pro without wiping is a whole different rant). But then I ran into a completely different stupid problem so now I still cant play it, but this isnt my thread.

My advice, from what I was able to tell, and I cant swear to this, but it seemed that something was wrong launching the Windows Install Shield. Something may have altered Windows, or it may just be a problem with that file. If you can, backup any and all important files, and give your HD a good formatting, reinstall Windows (process takes a good couple hours from the dozen or so times Ive done it in the past) and then give it a go that way. Best of luck if you follow my words!

Did you have 1.02 and not check the box and it let you use hardware mode? All I know is it crashes when you check the NVidia box with a GeForce card, and with 1.00 it didnt let me have hardware mode, I think I'll look and see if 1.02 w/out that box checked will let me. (Without hardware mode the game runs slow, cuz as I said, this system's fairly low end)

133
I have an NVidia GeForce2, dont use 1.02, it will NOT do any good! I dont know about the GeForce3, but on mine (I was playing on my brothers computer before, I just tried installing it on mine) it will pass all of the video tests, including 8-bit palleted textures, but hardware mode is still not available. (Which is a drag, since I have a fairly low end system, and without hardware mode it runs rather slow) But the 1.02 patch is for the Riva128 and TNT chipsets, not GeForce. I tried 1.02 to get hardware mode, and I had the same crash as Voltage, because youre trying to accelerate the game using a video chip you dont have.

134
Maybe its just me, and I havent checked it for a while, but shouldnt this question have long since been moved to the FAQs?

You have been blessed with the Cosmo Canyon crash, there is no true cause, and no true solution. (I theorize that its actually caused by the planetary alignment at the exact second you install FF7, if Jupiter aligns perfectly between the Sun and Pluto eclipsing Pluto, you will have the Cosmo Canyon crash)

With any luck, you can send your saved game to someone here, and they will be kind enough to play past that point and send it back your way.

Well, however you lost it, I dont think when they made the game they put much consideration into reobtaining those weapons. I doubt they put in a contingency plan in case you lost one. I think pretty much everyone agreed that your best bet is Jenova.

136
Well, that does sound reasonable, I figured if the sub got taken down you just died and had to start over. Ive always had to fight those guards, but no matter, I also never lose the sub game, haha. Thanks for the help everyone!  :D

I doubt you can find it digging in Bone Village. Bone Village is only good for 2 items,
Spoiler: show
the Lunar Harp and the Sector 6 Key.
Other then that its just useless filler items, at least as far as Ive seen, I never found anything else worthwhile there.

I cant speak for Steele, but I would guess that the Bone Village thing was just a guess on his part. Ive never even thought about having to reacquire an ultimate weapon. I stand by my previous advice, cheat. You got it legit once, you earned it.

Thanks a million. As I said, I know there are a LOT of open ends, but at the same time, that one always struck me and stood out, because, to my knowledge, there are no other occurences like that one, any other door or passage that was not meant to be accessable is not marked as one via that red arrow. But if you do get around to that, it would be helpful, just to ease my curiousity, haha. Id do it, but I know nothing of the makeup of those files and how to read them.

140
Well, after searching the forums for this and finding nothing, I decided Id take it upon myself. Just one of those little things, but here goes...

In Junon, under the city, in the room immediately upon exiting the first elevator (where you fight the two guards who want to date the lift operator), there is a passage immediately to the right (left if you were looking through characters eyes, but I speak from 3rd person view). The first time you can see this is if you go out of your way as soon as you have free run of the city. Its guarded by a Shinra troop and a dog. When youre headed for the underwater reactor, you have to fight the troop, but the dog remains where it is. If you use the Assist button, it does acknowledge it as an exit passage from that room (red arrow), but after much trying, I have yet to find a way to pass it, the guard stops you saying it is for authorized personnel only, and once the guard is gone, the dog will still growl at you if you try.

Now to my point. Does anyone know anything about the room beyond that passage? I know there are several open ends in the game, as well as a number of things that do nothing and have no purpose. But I also know several of you here have more knowledge of reading the game files than I. If anyone either 1) knows what area Im refering to and knows something I dont, or 2) can read the game files and figure out what is beyond that passage, or if anything is at all, it would be much appreciated if you would be so kind as to tell me. If I need to clarify anything please tell me. Thank you all in advance!  :D

Edit: Spelling, 2:24 am, go figure, haha.

Archive / FF7 major crash problem
« on: 2004-05-27 02:44:08 »
Aside from just the chocobo races, FF7 itself is still not entirely stable running under XP. I've had a crash or two like you describe before, I never installed any Cetra patches (because when I got that program it refused to work), just the chocobo patch. Best bet under XP is to run the game as unaltered as possible (fresh installation and just the chocobo patch). After that, anything you add to it comes with a risk, you are running a game on an unsupported OS. Alter at your own risk.  :D

General Discussion / FF7 on PC
« on: 2004-05-24 02:11:07 »
The PC version has better in game resolution, but the CG scenes are still 320x240 (the original PS resolution, standard TV resolution), so if you play the PC version on a TV screen there shouldn't be a noticable difference should there? I've never tried it, just a guess.

General Discussion / Chocobo Racing
« on: 2004-05-22 00:00:26 »
I think it's actually Pg Down and Assist on the PC. I thought Pg Up and Pg Down at first cuz on the PS it's R1+L1 (or maybe 2, I didn't play it much on PS), but if I recall correctly that wasn't right. Try Pg Down and Assist, best I can say, if that's wrong, I apologize.

So you do get somethin for beating him enough times? Wow, I know I've won a dozen or so S-Class races at least, maybe I just didn't beat Joe in enough of them. I'll have to try that later on. Sadly I can't play FF7 on this computer, it's installed on the other machine, which I don't have with me now, and it doesn't like this one.  :(

Cool, thanks much eerrr. Now that I know that I'll stop wasting space on someone elses thread, lol.

But I stand by what I said,
Spoiler: show
It would be nice if you got something special for beating Joe, who's the best chocobo racer around. Even an acknowledgement that you beat him would have been fine.
Oh well, it's still a fantastic game, and that's what matters!  :D

Yep, Joe worked his magic, and drove a player nuts  :D I can remember how p*ssed off I used to get at him. Don't worry, no matter how great your chocobo ever is, his will ALWAYS be just that much better. I've had some spectacular ones in the past, and he always has a better one.

But as for beating him, that's not the most difficult thing in the world. You can beat him with just about any chocobo with enough stamina, it's speed isn't important, because he will always be faster, and his speed and stamina depends on yours.

Best advice: As much stamina as possible, start the race holding OK and burst at full speed, keep it up until your stamina bar is down a good ways, nearing empty (on the short course this should be almost to the end of the spiral, can't recall where about I stop that first push on the long course). Remember to refill your stamina, or else you'll never have enough and wear out, then you're screwed. Give it another burst roughly every 5 seconds or so, just enough to keep your lead, because he will be gaining on you, but not so much that you burn up your stamina. Then when you get near the end, burst again, and get across that line as quick as you can.

The keywords for beating him? Burst and stamina. Once you get a chocobo with 999 stamina it's not too difficult, because you can push it hard for as long as possible. Hope that was of some help, but then with my skill with explaining things it might not be   LOL. But either way, best of luck to you.

P.S. While it's nice to be able to say you beat Joe, sadly you don't get anything for it other than that, which was a let-down I thought. They could have at least had him show up to congratulate you for owning him in his own sport.

P.P.S. Sorry for the tiny letters, I'm still a bit new here and didn't want anyone to jump me for saying that, I'm still not entirely sure what passes for spoilers in these parts  :erm: That and I don't know how you post with the black strip over it like I've seen other spoilers. Haven't used a message board for a few years, please forgive my ignorance there. That and sorry for making this so long, I'm sure you're all tired of reading this, if you still are, LOL.  :o

I always got an error message when it happened to me. "Final Fantasy 7 has encountereed an error and will be closed. etc etc. Would you like to send an error report?" and that whole thing. But I never paid enough attention to the specifics of the error to know if you're having the same one, sorry.

General Discussion / Tribute Video
« on: 2004-05-16 05:58:54 »
Well, thought I had DivX installed on here, but a second look, and sure enough, I was wrong, lol. I've had to wipe this thing so many times, I couldn't tell you for sure what I have installed on here. Downloading DivX now, be done eventually, then I can comment on it. If I don't come back, it means I either passed out or my computer blew up, either is as likely as the other with this thing  -_-

Edit: Sure enough, it worked, and with no internal explosions that I know of, lol. But very well done. Only thing, not Weapon one shown  :( Not my project, and therefore not my vision showing through, but I would have liked to see them shown in a tribute. Sure they didn't play as big a role as Meteor did, but they were a more immediate danger in the story, and a lot of fun to beat up, lol. But all in all, good work, congrats!
